SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (Dakota News Now) – After 41 years of being a staple on West Madison Street, Rosie’s Cafe is closing in Sioux Falls. The staff and family who have been behind the cafe for so many years said Thursday was a bittersweet celebration.
One last lunch special at Rosie’s, as the family-owned restaurant will close its doors after Friday’s open house.
Rosie’s was started by Rosie Warner when she bought it back in 1984. Her daughter, Beckie Mettler, took over almost 25 years ago.
Rosie has always been around to help out, but she said her health is starting to become a problem. But that hasn’t slowed the two down.
“Basically, from day one, we’ve been together. She’s been in and out a few times. The picture over there is her high school graduation, and that’s when we got started. She was working here then,” Warner said.
Beckie, who lives near Brant Lake, said Rosie’s will continue as Rosie’s Farmhouse Cafe in Chester. Moving the restaurant will cut down on her commute, and bring Rosie’s to a new home.
“The town of Chester is being very welcoming to us,” Mettler said.
But the family said they appreciated every day they spent in Sioux Falls over the past four decades, and they will miss their home in West Madison.
“I don’t know how we can say thank you enough. It’s just kept us going, and they’ve been here for us,” Warner said.
“Never thought we would be here this long. We always say that it’s always kind of been a joke around here that no one is more surprised than us,” Mettler said.
Rosie’s Cafe will host an open house on Friday, May 9, from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
