14. I see people surprised it happened so quick. Modern conclaves are generally pretty snappy.

    2013, it took 5 ballots across 2 days.

    2005, it took 4 ballots across 2 days.

    Oct. 1978, it took 8 ballots across 3 days.

    The longest most recent conclave was 1922, which was 14 ballots across 5 days.

    Edit: Of course I forgot to mention Gregory XVI’s conclave in 1830 and ’31, which was 83 ballots over a month and a half.

20. I don’t subscribe to a religion and wasn’t raised in religious household. I’m not quite an atheist and not quite agnostic. However, for some reason, I find this who black smoke white smoke tradition pretty cool. Something about it feels so old-timey. I realize the tradition is only about 120 years old but it seems so innocent when you put it up against the election of any one else – no yelling and shouting, no obnoxious graphics to cover the votes. It’s just nice and old-timey

25. Crazy that this guy is about to become one of the most famous people in the world after being a relative unknown. Francis never returned home after being elected. I’ve heard it said becoming pope is like a death of your original self and a rebirth as the new pontiff.

27. When I was a kid I didn’t realize they added chemicals to make the smoke black or white. I thought they voted then waited to see the smoke color. If it was black that just meant God didn’t like the pick and they had to start again.
