US Congress hearing fuels questions about Poland’s EU future

  1. There is about a 0% chance of the US removing troops from Poland to any significant degree or having them removed from NATO. The US has supported NATO membership for members who were and some who still are far less democratic. Especially since the leaders of nations can change and there is no point irreversibly harming relations when there is a possibility a future leader can align closer to NATO ideals. Even still, NATO is a defensive alliance and not a political one. If you aren’t communist then that’s good enough.

The process of becoming a fully democratic nation is slow and often bumpy. People often forget that even nations like South Korea, Taiwan, Spain and Greece had authoritarian and less than ideal leaders at one point. The process of open and fair elections eventually leads to a vibrant democracy it just takes time and patience. You can’t force a nation to move along this path by force. In fact, doing so would cause a backlash and slow or move a nation away from democratization.

Poland is also probably one of the staunchest NATO advocates and actively carries its weight in NATO. Congress has hearings on literally everything and I wouldn’t give it much thought if I were Poland. Especially since congress is currently controlled by one of the most progressive legislatures in recent American history.
