Ursula von der Leyen and fellow EU leaders visited Luxembourg to commemorate the 75th year of the Schuman Declaration.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen visited Luxembourg on Europe Day to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Schuman Plan. The visit followed a morning meeting with new German Chancellor Friedrich Merz.
Von der Leyen was joined by European Council President António Costa and European Parliament President Roberta Metsola.
The Schuman Plan, proposed in 1950, aimed to merge French and West German coal and steel production, laying the foundation for European unity.
In the afternoon, the delegation took a symbolic walk through Luxembourg City, with a commemorative stop at Place de Metz – where the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC), the first European institution, began its work.
