    Some companies across the United States are limiting the number of goods they import, after President Donald Trump imposed a 145% tariff placed last month on most goods imported from China.

    John Sorgi, owner of Hudson-based American Fireworks, says his family company — which supplies fireworks to multiple states and roughly 700 fireworks displays annually — has temporarily halted shipments from China. They’re hoping Trump decides to lower the tariffs or give the fireworks industry an exemption.

    “If we’re paying 150% more for a product, it’s got to get passed on,” Sorgi said. “We’re going to do our best, but it’s not like we can just work at a loss. And that’s what I think a lot of people are going to see in a lot of industries going forward, because right now I don’t think people have really felt the true effect.”

    China commands the fireworks industry, producing over 90% of the world’s supply. With nearly all fireworks sourced from China, companies like Sorgi’s face unique pressure.
