THE best future for Scotland will be as an independent country inside the European Union, the External Affairs Secretary has said.

Angus Robertson issued the statement as the Scottish Government marked Europe Day.

He warned that the UK risked being “marooned” outside the economic bloc as he hailed Scotland’s “long-standing shared values” with Europe.: “On Europe Day, we celebrate a lifetime of peace in Europe, achieved in no small part by the creation of the European Union.

“We are unwavering in our belief that Scotland’s best future lies as an independent country within the European Union.

“The current global economic volatility simply reinforces the importance of Scotland having the security, stability and opportunity that comes with EU membership.

“Without it, Scotland and the UK risk being marooned outside of the world’s largest single market.”

Robertson said becoming a member of the EU again would reduce barriers to trade, bring free flows of data and reduce bureaucracy.

………………………

Robertson said ONLY A VOTE FOR SNP can make this happen!

  1. Good one Angus, certainly earned your pay there.

  2. It is impossible for us to be in the EU and out of the UK without massive problems trading with the UK

    Independence can’t change geography.

  3. An SNP minister has said something in line with SNP politics.

In another news, Trump said something stupid, Putin said something untrustworthy and the new Pope said something religious.

  4. You can’t afford to be your own country, that’s why the independence votes fail

  5. The usual bullshit of saying rejoining the eu will make up for putting up a hard border with our largest trading partner. Disappointing how many fall for it.

  6. It will absolutely be a painful process but I do think it would (eventually) be worth it.

  7. Scotland, or any other country, cannot be in the EU and be an independent country. You are either in and comply with their rules and laws, or are out and independent.

Joining the EU would mean having the Euro, so losing a lot of control money, letting them agree to the budgets and any laws passed. The EU has demonstrated with countries like Hungary and Italy, that if you elect a government they don’t like, they will try to force change or overturn laws that goes against EU laws or ideals.

  8. SNP need to be honest about the amount of austerity and cutbacks that would be needed to join the EU.

Currently Scotland is no where near able to meet their financial requirements to join them.

  9. Obviously the word ‘paradox’ is not in Robertson’s dictionary.

    Independent. In the EU. 🤔

  10. I can’t see the UK giving us a referendum. The demographics are likely pro Indy and the current state of the UK isn’t in favour of sticking with the status quo.

  11. The biggest problem with that, is Scotland doesn’t meet the criteria for entry.

  12. Right… Because the EU is interested in paying the bills for their social security and benefits system…

  13. Talking out his arse, uk and eu about to sign a deal and this guy wants to break and go back to square one with no currency, no funding for nhs, universities, prescriptions, social care etc. not even a military to protect borders from the likes of Russia. Mans off his rocker

  14. Propaganda alert. Zero recommendation or ideas from air miles Angus as to the clear and obvious issues with his assertion. Still he’ll take the 1st class flights and expenses stipend in support of his lies.

  15. Putin bots are at it again. Worked with Brexit so I’m sure Vladimir will get his way and end the UK.

  16. Would that be the EU which has said they don’t want Scotland as an independent member.

  17. Scotland just does what it’s English rulers tell them , sad really , Farage will probably turn it into a large golf club for the Cheeto Jesus Trump when Farage becomes PM .

  18. Kinda missed the boat on this one – this sub was mostly against independence when we had it on a silver platter

  19. It does baffle me why the SNP push rejoining the EU and not EFTA.

Like it or not Scotlands economy is intertwined with that of the rest of the UK. Independence won’t change that, certainly not for multiple decades.

The EU might be the world’s largest single market but crucially Scotland’s largest market by some considerable distance is the rest of the UK. It makes little economic sense for a country that does 70% of its trade with the UK to join the EU whilst the UK remains outside.

The SNP have called EFTA a “halfway house” and dismissed this option. When in reality it seems the only credible option in the table for an Independent Scotland.

  20. Does anyone think the EU will take the renewable power Scotland generates by an undersea cable like England is doing?

  21. “Independent”.

This is the thing I don’t get – I would understand the independence argument if it was truly independent, but that isn’t it.
