PHOENIX (AZFamily) — Billboards are popping up across Phoenix and Tucson with a message that’s gaining attention.
One can be found at Central and Thomas in Phoenix. At first glance, the billboard looks like a postcard with “Greetings from Saguaro National Park,” but below it reads, “Reduced visiting hours made possible by DOGE.” This message appears to target the Department of Government Efficiency.
The billboards were funded by the group More Perfect Union to highlight the impacts of federal government budget cuts.
While Saguaro National Park reduced its hours earlier this year due to job cuts, it has since returned to its regular hours after a court ordered the fired employees to be reinstated. “Once those employees were reinstated, then the park was back open seven days a week to the normal operating hours,” said Fred Stula, the executive director for Friends of Saguaro National Park. He feels now is the time to keep funding national parks rather than make cuts.
More Perfect Union released this statement: “Last year, over 330 million people visited a national park, a record number. This year, park goers will be met with reduced staff, longer wait times, and dirty or unsafe facilities.”
“It’s more about understanding the importance of national parks and making sure that they receive the funding and the support they need,” said Stula.
