Met Police crackdown on tool theft, as force recovers half a million worth of tools at car boot sale

  2. Yeah but tool theft was far worse in the 1970s, 90s or 2010s. Nowadays tradesmen only think their tools have been nicked because they doomscroll TikTok.

    Harsher sentencing is the counsel of despair. It is what politicians (and the public) reach for when they’ve given up on prevention and detection. We need to catch people quickly and convict them next week not two years from now when a court slot opens up.

    It is good that the Met has recovered half a million pounds’ worth of tools but it looks like that is a one-off from a single car boot sale. It needs to be part of a larger and longer term programme.
