Judge says it’s a pity that Ireland’s ban on sunbed tanning sessions for under-18s, doesn’t also apply to adults.

  1. Maximum penalties are €4,000 / 6 month’s prison for first offense. €5,000 / 12 months prison for subsequent offenses.

Considering the judges views (which are correct imo) it’ll be interesting to see if they back them up when sentencing.

In the Last case I could see the offenders got away with a poor box donation and no conviction. Facts may differ obviously. https://www.echolive.ie/nationalnews/arid-41086858.html

  2. while the judge may think that hes not in a position to change it , if its such an issue it will be changed

  3. Well…you can’t outlaw stupid, prisons are full as it is…..

  4. Let adults do whatever the hell they want, even if it’s bad for them, as long as they’re not harming anyone else

  5. When I was growing up, there was a woman around the corner from me that ran a business renting out sun beds. It wasn’t a tanning salon – you had the sunbed in your house. She had one herself, and every night, you’d see the purple glow from an upstairs room. Her skin was brown leather. She died in her 50s from skin cancer. I don’t know how many of her customers she took with her.

  6. Suggestion: every adult should have the freedom to choose to use sun beds or smoke/vape. But the state should be able to deny giving free healthcare if they get an associated cancer or other health issues later in life. Too harsh?

These people should not be facing prison time at the taxpayers expense.

  7. > Judge Gabbett said: “To be frank now, there were prosecutions by the HSE for smoking [in the workplace]… this is the same thing. It is probably more dangerous.”

What on Earth is the judge on about? The laws against smoking in the workplace are to protect people from secondhand smoke, not because we think the smoker shouldn’t be able to make their own decisions. There’s no secondhand exposure from tanning beds, this isn’t similar at all.

  8. Ban on under 18’s is a no brainer.

If an adult wants access to a machine that turns you into beef jerky rock on, but sign here excluding you from public healthcare for skin cancers.

  9. As someone who recently had 5 surgeries to remove various skin cancers + a bunch of follow-up treatment I definitely don’t recommend tanning over or under age

  10. Meanwhile is Asia people use umbrellas outside to try and stay whiter. Go figure.

  11. Yes ban them. People should be protecting against making catastrophic health decisions.

  12. I use a tanning salon, 2-3 times in the winter for 3 minutes a session. It really helps with my depression during the darkest parts of the year. I’ve weighed the benefits vs the risks, and I certainly am not getting colour from it. It just really helps lift my mood. Will continue to do so as I want to avoid stronger anti-depressants than I’m on currently. If we’re going to start banning things which cause harm let’s start outright with things like vapes and cigarettes which impact others, or foods with added sugar targeted at kids.

  13. As someone with an Irish dad from Australia, please please please don’t use sunbeds. Our skin is not made to take that amount of UV at all. I’m getting regular skin cancer check ups at 23 while wearing sunscreen on any exposed part of my body everyday. There are so many horror stories of young Aussies with European backgrounds getting the worst skin cancer and dying. I could not imagine why anyone would use a sunbed when fake tan exists. Also if you don’t get skin cancer you’re going to look at least a decade older than you actually are
