End of free Covid testing could put vulnerable at risk, say UK experts

  1. I’m really not sure why free testing should end. It’s not that expensive. I’m not someone bashing the government for moving on, I’m happy isolation nor masks are mandatory anymore. But if someone wants to be more careful, and I’m sure many friends and families of vulnerable people want to, why not keep the tests free for them.

  2. Hilariously they are still offering tests to vulnerable people – who need others to be tested in order to sed them.

Edit: I also don’t understand why, to put it politely, the anti covid control people, having told us that the vulnerable can just stay at home, are upset about this.

  3. People in here judging the vulnerable for not wanting to die lol.

If you think the protection of life and preventative measures is a bad thing then you aren’t supporting the ideals of the NHS.

The same people bitching in here about LFTs being offered for free are also the same character of person who would be bitching last year about having to pay for a test to fly away despite it being an elective activity.

Why don’t you just advocate we sent all the vulnerable people to the concentration camps? Seems like your lack of empathy towards them should just skip the denial and head straight to the culling.

Your taxes get pissed away on many, many things worse than providing free LFT. At least LFTs are something that you can directly benefit from with your taxes.

And guess what… a year’s supply of LFT would still likely be cheaper than an admission to hospital due to someone being exposed to the virus because others didn’t know and the cost on the health service and GP practices from the secondary effects of covid. They aren’t fucking expensive to produce or buy in bulk if boots can sell them for a few quid each AND still make a tidy profit. Better to source them in massive bulk with government power than rely on the private sector.

  4. Strange that testing for any other disease or illness is completely free (at point of use as there seems to be some pedants about)

    Why charge for this one?

  5. Had a girl at work the other day with all the symptoms, her boyfriend has it but because she couldn’t get any LFTs she came to work and the bosses were fine with that.

I promptly left (I fly out of the country within days) and told them to call me once she’s tested. It’s no fucking wonder hospitalisations are up and infections are through the fucking roof.

  6. I frankly think its totally wrong to end free testing. I tested positive March 17th, confirmed with PCR few days later. I was still positive yesterday 27th. Have been testing since day 5 of infection and now out of lateral flow tests and can’t get more. How am I meant to KNOW when Im clear? Given that I didnt realise initially I had Covid (but for the lateral flow tests), I know I would ordinarily have considered it a cold and continued attending work whilst infectious. I work with the general public and could quite easily have been merrily spreading this around. Given that many of us were ‘sold’ the vaccine on the basis that it was an altruistic thing to do: protect others, I dont see how ending these tests helps?!

  7. The tory government puts vulnerable people at risk. Its something they seem to campaign on and yet people love them for it.

  8. I have to test each time before I visit my elderly Dad in his care home. It’s going to be expensive, and may limit how often I can visit him. He is frail, has dementia and is declining. How is that fair.

  9. The existence of a Tory government puts all kind of vulnerable people at risk.

Doesn’t seem to stop them getting in.

  10. Once I have to pay for them, I won’t be using them. There are 5 of us in our house, money is tight as fuck as it is. Simply put, I can’t afford to buy them. Happy to use them and have done regularly as kids in school etc.

  11. The reason its ending is because we dont test for colds and flus either and they want to take away the ‘weight’ that corona has so its more normalised. They want to stop daily tallies of covid cases.

  12. Literally just today was stuck far from home in a shopping centre and had just been informed I could have covid. Had to learn from a fucking sign in boots about this. Either stocks have ran out or pharmacies and stuff have just stopped selling them.

  13. Tests were never “Free”.

We pay for the NHS and the tests.. makes no sense to now charge for them other than to line the pockets of the “already rich enough”.

  14. Could? More like will. I’d say it’ll be nice when we’re back in lockdown but after Friday it’s not like case numbers are going to be accurate, can’t wait for the next variant to go undetected.

  15. I’d much rather my tax money was going on free testing than subsidising the profits of Conservative-party connected businesses for products that weren’t fit for purpose, but that’s just me.

  16. It’s basically so Bojo can say we are finally over Covid. Lots of people now won’t get tested so the cases will drop significantly. No better way to say the UK is practically Covid free when hardly anyone is doing tests.

  17. Yes, it’s gambling with the lives of the vulnerable in our society. But what this article doesn’t consider is “What about the profit?” /s

  18. Putting the vulnerable at risk is the government’s hobby. In their mind, they should have had a bit of personal responsibility before they went and became vulnerable.

  19. I’m really glad those experts chimed in to tell us this as it wasn’t completely clear who was going to suffer from a conservative policy.

  20. If you can’t get a test from the government’s site, try you local, non chain pharmacy. I picked up a kit on Saturday from my nearest one.

  21. I’m glad I live in Scotland where lateral flow tests are still free, my husband and I have both tested positive within the past few days. Would hate to be potentially infecting people if I didn’t know.
