So I was in Lidl today and all the cheddar is security tagged. None of the other cheese. Just the cheddar. Is it really that high of a theft target? 👮🏻🧀

  1. Yes. Same as salmon, electric toothbrush change heads, chocolate and razor blades.

  2. Because junkies keep stealing them. Amfetamine and cheese, classic combination.

  3. Fun fact: cheese is the most stolen food in the world.

Not sure why cheddar specifically in this case though. Price probably?

  4. Cheese is one of the most shoplifted items in the world. Google cheese + shoplifting, there’s loads of research about it.

[A story from a couple years ago](https://yle.fi/a/74-20018140), though that was parmesan not cheddar.

  5. Yeah. Shops have rolls of security tags. They stick whatever is stolen frequently.

  6. Sorry I’m late boss, I was up all night eating cheese with the boys

  7. Because people steal them for re-sale wherever it is that you live/that Lidl is located in. For context, where I live neither of the 2 nearby Lidls need security tags on their cheese. I’ve only ever seen the e-sec. tags on whole filet mignons and other pieces of expensive meat here.

  8. You got to be in really bad spot to steal low cost brand cheese from lidl. Or just in desperate need of cheese. There are like 100 products in lidl alone that for sure are more valuable

  9. If you got a lot of cheddar, it means you’re loaded.
Got to secure those bad boys.

  10. Lidl in the last few years has been adding those tags a little bit everywhere. I’ve noticed them on various pieces of meat (beef and pork), salmon, chocolate (Fazer), and nuts.

    It’s to prevent shoplifting.

  11. Cheese is stolen a lot. Really the blame is on shady restaurant owners who keep buying it from junkies.

(any time you are buying obviously stolen shit you are basically sending a signal to thiefs to “hey steal more of this”)

  12. its a shit neighborhood lidl then, they dont have security tags in most lidls i have been to. I once saw a prisma that had tags on the cheapest 99 cent lauantaimakkara.

  13. I mean, just look at how much you’ve bought. If some % of cheddar connoiseurs steal, then it makes sense to tag a high volume product like cheddar.

  14. The tag shouldn’t be on the front end of the packaging, it should be in the back where it doesn’t catch anyone’s eye too much. But yes, cheese is a massive target for theft. It’s a daily task in our store to tag three to five pieces of each product that is on our list of often stolen items and place them on the shelf. I’d wager most of them still end up stolen, even with the tags in place

  15. Some stores have tags in cheapest wieners also. It depends on the store. Some has fish, some salami, some cheese. Each store probably has a top list of what people steal

  16. My local Lidl has improved something. I don’t get noisy beeping anymore when I buy tagged products on self-service checkout and walk out through the security gate.

  17. because of drug addicts who steal it and try to sell it for a euro or two. same goes with fish, meat etc

  18. Due to the hard times, shoplifting is as high as ever. Same thing happening to Tokmanni
