A group of Bryan County students has been invited to participate in the H2GP World Final in Germany, which Hyundai hosts. The event brings scholars from across the globe to compete against each other using hydrogen cars they built in school. The trip to Germany comes after winning the Hyundai Grand Prix earlier this year. “My team and I won the race, and we beat all the other Bryan County teams and Richmond Hill teams. So we’re advancing to Germany, where a six-hour race will be held,” said student Ayden Parker.Parker is part of the two teams at school taking the 20-hour trip to represent Georgia, one of four states going on the adventure. The other schools from the United States are in Illinois, California and New York. “It’s really a big, once-in-a-lifetime thing, like a big Germany trip for the old school in Bryan County, it means a lot,” said Parker. The group has a long way to go. It needs nearly $35,000 to go on the late August trip. The money will cover travel, food, activities, hotels and parts for the cars. “We worked very hard to get here, going through all the struggles of trying to build the car. We need to figure out how to cut back a way to ensure we don’t ruin it (the cars) without taking something out or accidentally cutting,” said student Heidi Long.Long is also going on the trip. She shared that the overall experience, from starting with parts to building a car that will compete against hundreds of students from across the globe, was one of her favorite lessons this year. “I always thought that was really cool, and then getting much into this class, it really opened up my eyes to the world of engineering,” said Long.To learn more about the tournament, click here.
