Israel launches new strikes on Syria following sectarian violence • FRANCE 24 English

Syria’s government calls it a dangerous escalation after Israel carried out an air strike near the presidential palace in Damascus. The message from these protesters in the capital echoes the governments Israel must stay out of Syrian affairs. We condemn foreign intervention, sectarianism, and anyone allowing foreign intervention in Syria. We are Syrians and we can solve our own problems. This Israeli bombardment strengthens and encourages the idea of dividing Syria. Israel says Friday strike and others it carried out earlier in the week are a message to Syria’s Islamist leadership. Let no harm come to the country’s Drews minority. It’s after days of clashes between Drews and progovernment gunmen left more than 100 people dead. But the latest Israeli strike came after Drew’s community leaders and government officials met to ease tensions, with one Drews leader saying they did not need Israel’s protection. Syrian security forces insist they’re the ones best placed to protect minorities in the country. Despite the challenges, the foreign threats, the Israeli planes, we are present and nothing can prevent us from protecting our people or carrying out our duty towards them. As this unit began patrolling a village in Sueda province on Friday, members of the Drews community returned to looted homes after earlier fleeing the violence. Some residents expressed skepticism about Israel’s intervention. What good have Israeli threats done us? The Israelis on their own. Those who are close to us are better than those who are far away. But the outbreaks of sectarian violence have sown fear among religious and ethnic minorities in the new Syria under a government dominated by Islamists.

Israel launched more than 20 air strikes inside Syria late Friday, a war monitor said, following up an attack near the presidential palace in Damascus which was condemned as a “dangerous escalation” by the country’s Islamist rulers. The strikes came amid Israeli warnings to the Damascus government not to harm the Druze minority, following recent sectarian clashes.
