  1. Any way to read this article without paying? I tried disabling javascript but it didn’t help.

  2. Merkel is history and Scholz has the chance to correct (again) Germany course towards Russia. If Merkel have stayed in power, the situation would be quite different today. Merkel stayed way too long in power, how is this possible in a democratic country like Germany.

  3. The only thing more amusing than heating a building with gas is the ridiculous notion that you can civilise barbarians by throwing billions of euros at them for said gas.

  4. A good article, as it stops putting the blame just on individuals but instead highlights how we Germans tended to be very naive in our dealings with Russia for decades, and have generally lost all sense of real-world geopolitics, instead basing our foreign policy on the deeply ingrained post-war pacifism and idealism, both of which were tools for our national psyche for dealing with our Nazi past.

Personally I have always thought that we have in many ways overcompensated for said past. We underequipped our military out of the misled thinking that doing so would create more peace and stability instead of less. We failed to decisively stop the influx of poor migrants from the Near East and Africa due to a deep-seated wish to be the “good guys” in history for a change (and some economics wishful thinking that those people could fill up the gaps in our workforce).

Germany urgently and deftly needs a heavy injection of a sense of _realpolitik_ injected not just into the political caste, but the population at large.
