Hello, r/germany! This weekend, I happened upon what I think is a really cool assortment of German beer steins and bottle openers at a yard sale. I live in the US and don’t normally come across items such as these. The owners of this collection lived in Germany for several years during the early ‘90’s and purchased the majority of their steins and bottle openers from various flea markets. I’m having trouble deciding which openers I want to purchase, so I thought that I’d ask for a little outside input. Assuming that you think they’re cool too, which openers would you purchase if given the opportunity? Can anyone give me insight into some of these beer/ beverage brands? Most of the openers pictured only cost $1, so I’ll probably buy a few. I’m not planning to resell them; I just want some fun conversation pieces. Thanks for your help! : )

  1. You don’t have bottle openers in the US?

Either way, I’d probably pick the octopus ones one (third picture on the dark surface), because octopuses are badass, and the Getränke H. Jacobs one from the first pic, because it’s not a brand (like the Apolinaris or beer brand ones), but some local shop.

  2. I’ve never seen anybody collect bottle openers before (not judging just haven’t seen it). Can’t really help with advice, I’ve been using lighters etc. since forever but really cool post!

  3. The openers are neat. I’d get one of those with a wooden handle, they are the most comfortable to use, imho. Also obligatory brag about being able to use anything as an opener.

  4. Just on a sidenote: We Germans do not, I repeat: do not call a beer mug a ‘Stein’. That’s an USian thing…

  5. Ngl we don’t give Bottle openers that much thought. A lighter works too. Or a piece of paper. Or another bottle

  6. Most of those bottle openers are from bigger German breweries that still exist today? And some are souvenirs or gifts (like the one from the German football Club Eintracht Frankfurt)

I would take one of the wooden ones from the first image.

If you‘re looking for another conversion/bottle opener: The German tool company Wera has a bottle opener in the same design as their other tools:

  7. Somehow I was expecting a photo showing all the things we use to open bottles in germany, what happened to opening a bottle with another, a lighter, a Zollstock, the beer crate.. Since when are Germans relying on “openers”

  8. The one with the cork handle is quite expensive (<30€) https://www.ebay.de/itm/375548878542?

Gerolsteiner, appollinaris (now a part of Coca-Cola )and Mineralbrunnen are selling sparkling or mineral water, bluna is a soda company.

There are 2 fountains in the city where appollinaris is located. You can get the untreated water there for free. Due to the high iron content, the water turns brown and rusty after a few days.
