  1. Any slovakian want to provide some context to the second paragraph? I can imagine that people in Prague would not take kindly to the statement that the Red Army liberated Czechoslovakia, but maybe it was different in Slovakia.

    And the iron curtain was set up by Russia, by invading another country.

    The problem is delicate, we don’t have methods to kick them out, but we cant interfere with a member democracy either.

    People like this questionable politician, Orban and all the far right will destroy the EU and jeopardise all our nation into puppets if we don’t solve the problem

  12. I wonder why Fico didn’t come to Ukraine to pay tribute to more than 60,000 red army soldiers, who were fighting to liberate Slovakia in WW2.
    Or does mr. Fico think these soldiers came from the forests of Siberia?

  14. While the Red Army did liberate Eastern Europe from Nazi Germany, the prople weren’t free after the war. They would only deserve a visit if they hadn’t overstayed their welcome.

    Because, you know, 20 000 – 25 000 of those soldiers who have died liberating Slovakia were Ukranian. As he said, it have nothing to do with international situation, just paying respect to fallen soldiers…right?

  20. Being 60, you would think he would remember what it was like to live under authoritarianism and the ‘sphere of influence’ of the USSR. Especially when they invaded your country and removed liberal reforms.

    You state that your visit to Moscow is to honor the more than 60,000 Red Army soldiers who died liberating Slovakia. That is a noble sentiment — but one that demands historical accuracy and moral consistency.

    The soldiers who died in Slovakia during the Second World War were not only Russians. In fact, a significant number of them were Ukrainians and Romanians, serving in the 1st and 2nd Ukrainian Fronts of the Red Army. These men — many from present-day Ukraine — fought and died to free Central Europe from fascism. Today, their descendants are once again fighting for freedom — not in a foreign land, but on their own soil, defending Ukraine from Russian aggression.

    To invoke their memory while standing alongside Vladimir Putin — the very man waging a brutal war against Ukraine — is deeply contradictory. You honor the liberators of the past while turning your back on the defenders of the present.

    You ask how diplomacy can exist without dialogue. Fair question. But dialogue should not come at the expense of truth, justice, or solidarity with a nation under siege. If you wish to pay tribute to those who liberated Slovakia, perhaps start by acknowledging the courage of Ukrainians — past and present — who have stood against tyranny.

    With all due contempt,
    Every Slovak who remembers history and values integrity.

    I personally support this kind of historical remembrance — it’s important. But I find it dishonest to claim you’re truly honoring the dead by visiting Moscow on May 9 alone.
    If you’re serious about commemorating the legacy of the Red Army, then you must also visit Kyiv on May 8. The Soviet victory belongs to all the post-Soviet nations, not just Russia — even if Russian ultranationalists and the current Russian government try to claim it exclusively.

  35. Didn’t Slovakia wilfully join the nazis in WW2? Even take part in the attack on Poland.

    All USSR did was facilitate Slovakia’s denazification, not liberate it.

    I think my dog has more brains than Fico.
