Known for its incredible views of the Northern Lights, rugged volcanic landscapes and stunning waterfalls, the Isle of Skye shares many of the striking natural features that make Iceland so popular – but offers them closer to home. Right off the coast of Scotland, the Isle of Skye is the largest of the Inner Hebrides and about 50 miles long – and has so much to offer.

In fact, travel experts at Sally’s Cottages previously reviewed some of Europe’s top destinations based on TikTok searches and recommended the Isle of Skye as a great alternative to Iceland for Brits seeking a “taste of foreign travel” while staying close to home.

A spokesperson said: “A popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts, Reykjavik has earned 29.5 million views on TikTok. The good news is you don’t have to travel as far as Iceland for rugged landscapes, long summer days and a glimpse of the Northern Lights.

“Full of unique charm and breathtaking scenery, The Isle of Skye is brimming with mesmerising waterfalls and tranquil fairy pools, comparable to those found in the Icelandic capital.

“The Scottish area also has the magic of myths and heritage to rival Reykjavik. Make sure to take a walk along the Old Man of Storr, a pinnacle of rock said to have marked the grave of a fallen giant.”

One of the most famous landmarks is the Old Man of Storr on the Trotternish Ridge with its dramatic rock formations, spiky rock pinnacle and stunning panoramic views over the island’s rugged landscape. The Quiraing is another must-see for anyone exploring Skye with its otherworldly landscape of jagged cliffs, green hills, and pinnacles.

Skye is also home to a variety of wildlife, including seals, red deer, golden eagles, and even otters. But you can take a break from the outdoors in Portree, the charming capital of the Isle of Skye, where you can enjoy the colorful harbourside buildings and cosy pubs, then explore Dunvegan Castle, the historic home of the MacLeod clan.

One Tripadvisor user advised a trip to the Quiraing rock formations.

They said: “Full of natural beauty. Best place to visit in Scotland, we will visit isle of Skye again.”

Another uder said: “I’ve done a decent amount of travelling and the Isle of Skye was possibly the most beautiful place I’ve ever been. The landscape and views are just amazing.”

Another person wrote on Reddit: “Isle of Skye is definitely the best place to visit in Scotland. I just came back from a nine day trip from Scotland and I can easily nominate Skye as my best three days there.”

They added: “If your Scotland trip is only for three days and you love nature, then don’t even think about it and book Isle of Skye.”
