According to information shared on May 9, 2025, by Paweł Bejda, Secretary of State at the Polish Ministry of National Defense, Poland has received an additional delivery of 19 M1A2 SEPv3 Abrams main battle tanks (MBTs) from the United States. These tanks will soon be integrated into the Polish Army’s operational formations, further strengthening the country’s armored capabilities. This delivery is part of a broader $4.75 billion Foreign Military Sales (FMS) agreement signed in April 2022, under which Poland will receive a total of 250 M1A2 SEPv3 Abrams tanks. The deal also includes 26 M88A2 HERCULES armored recovery vehicles, 17 M1110 Joint Assault Bridges, and comprehensive packages for logistics, spare parts, and training.

Before deployment with the Polish Army, the newly delivered U.S. M1A2 SEPv3 Abrams tanks will undergo deprocessing and inspection at the Wojskowe Zakłady Motoryzacyjne (WZM S.A.) in Poznań, which hosts the Abrams Regional Competence Center. This facility ensures each vehicle meets Polish military standards and is fully mission-capable before integration into frontline units. The initial delivery of 28 M1A2 SEPv3 tanks arrived in Poland in January 2025 via the port of Gdynia and was quickly distributed across various armored formations.
The M1A2 SEPv3 variant represents the most advanced iteration of the Abrams series, featuring significant enhancements in firepower, protection, and situational awareness. Key upgrades include improved armor protection to counter both kinetic and chemical threats, an upgraded electrical power generation system, a new ammunition data link to support airburst munitions, and next-generation communications and battlefield management systems. These advancements ensure seamless interoperability with NATO forces and provide the Polish Army with enhanced lethality, survivability, and command-and-control capabilities in modern warfare environments.
The latest acquisition forms part of Poland’s ambitious plan to modernize and expand its armored forces, aiming to become the most powerful tank operator in Europe. In addition to the 250 M1A2 SEPv3 tanks, Poland finalized a separate $1.4 billion deal in January 2023 to purchase 116 refurbished M1A1 FEP Abrams tanks. These tanks were delivered by mid-2024 and are already operational within the Polish Land Forces. Taken together, Poland will possess a total of 366 Abrams tanks, including both M1A2 SEPv3 and M1A1 variants.
Furthermore, Poland is actively integrating 180 K2 Black Panther tanks, acquired from South Korea. Deliveries began in December 2022, and by the end of 2024, 84 units had already been received. This acquisition represents just the first phase, with Poland reportedly planning to eventually procure up to 1,000 K2 tanks, including future domestically-produced variants under the K2PL program.
Poland also operates a significant fleet of German-made Leopard 2 tanks, which includes 105 Leopard 2A5 and 126 Leopard 2A4 tanks. Many of the Leopard 2A4s are being upgraded to the Leopard 2PL standard, featuring improved armor, fire control systems, and crew survivability enhancements.
Altogether, Poland’s armored forces will include 366 Abrams tanks, 180 K2 Black Panther tanks, and 231 Leopard 2 tanks (both A4 and A5 variants), resulting in a total of 777 modern main battle tanks. This unprecedented armored strength places Poland as the leading tank power in Europe, surpassing other NATO members on the continent in both quantity and capability of modern MBTs.
The transformation of Poland’s armored forces is a direct response to the evolving security environment in Eastern Europe and underscores Warsaw’s commitment to NATO and regional deterrence. With a robust mix of U.S., South Korean, and German armored platforms, Poland is not only modernizing its military infrastructure but also becoming a cornerstone of NATO’s eastern defense posture. These investments ensure that the Polish Army will be well-prepared to respond to any military threat, reaffirming its role as a key player in the defense of Europe.
