I'm about to have my master's thesis of Intelligent Systems finished and I'm planning to relocate to Norway as an AI developer, preferable in NLP. I have 4 y of experience in programming for a large company. I have registered on finn.no and learnt very basic Norwegian to operate on those pages more efficiently, but I don't see much offers. I'm thinking of writing to companies directly asking, but I don't know where to find where should I try to apply to. I feel like finding the companies that would hire me is a bit a bottleneck for me rn.

Do you think my chances are high?
Could you recommend me how can I find the companies (and what they do) efficiently and clearly?
Maybe you have some other advice?

  1. Norway isn’t a big market. I’m an immigrant here and I’ve got over 10 years of experience as a developer, but I don’t live in Oslo and it’s difficult to land a job. Of course I have one, but I’m looking for something better. You must have a lot of experience, have some luck or speak Norwegian (or at least Danish or Swedish) to increase the possibility. Getting a mid position isn’t an easy task.

  2. If you read the industry news, you get a feel for who the players are. You can practice your technical Norwegian as well. The best tech/engineering industry news sites would be tu.no / digi.no (Digi is owned by TU Media, the parent company of Teknisk Ukeblad/TU, but is more IT focused where TU is engineering focused).

The big companies also seem to have AI initiatives to greater or lesser extent, and even if you don’t land an AI job you can tread water and build your CV while working for them until you do.
