Planned carbon tax hike will go ahead – despite soaring cost of living

  1. This is a fucking disgrace. Ryan had basically admitted the carbon taxes are a cash grab, inflations through the roof and people are struggling everywhere we look.

Never again will this prick get into power.

  2. If we just put fuel/energy taxes up 10,000% then we’ll hit our emissions targets. It’s just that simple.

What’s happening with the 9% fuel vat that we’re going to get scammed on soon after?

  3. At what point does revolution start?? Seriously.. giving us 176 euro towards electricity and then hiking our heating bills by 9%. We’ve already been avoiding putting it on. Looks like we’ll all be Forty Coats inside in our houses now.

  4. The purpose of carbon tax was to influence behaviour? Now we have the increasing prices for energy… we don’t need the carbon tax as our behaviours are changing (as per Eamonn’s intelligent suggestions).

  5. Carbon tax is a fixed price per kilo of carbon, it isn’t related to the price of energy. The price of energy can go up and down all it wants, but the amount paid in carbon tax would remain the same.

    Decreasing taxes doesn’t reduce inflation.

  6. Look on the bright side, because of this tax hike that is motivated by nothing other than greed, the Green Party is facing almost certain electoral wipeout at the Locals 2024 and the next General Election, and Eamon is almost certain to lose his seat again! Its Political Suicide at its finest!

  7. I swear to fuck, Eamonn Ryan has been the most inept human being to hold such a high office. He is utterly fucking clueless, an empty suit.

  8. My biggest gripe with the carbon tax being used to retrofit houses is that it mainly benefits home-owners and landlords.

People who cant afford to own a home are paying to increase the value of someone else’s property

  9. Adding more costs to an economy that is afflicted with high inflation seems counterintuitive. Just like the alcohol increases earlier in the year. All these added costs without comparable raises in income makes this a very expensive place to live. The government needs to act to counter inflation.

  10. “Mary Lou?”

    “Yep?”

“You can knock off early today. They’re doing it to themselves again.”

  11. The only thing the green party has is raising taxes. Plenty of other options, but this is what they always go with.

  12. I’m sat here so disheartened that I will
literally have to start selling anything I own to afford anything.
Husband is self employed and his materials have shot up. He won’t be self employed much longer.

  13. I wouldn’t have minded paying the carbon tax if the money went into improving public transport (or in some cases, developing public transport) but it’s just money being taken for the sake of it.

I honestly don’t see how this improves the environment.

  14. unpopular opinion, ireland already has some of the highest car prices and costs in the eu, yet we are very car dependant, build decent public transit and people will use it

  15. Is there a more useless, clueless sack of shit in this country than Eamonn Ryan? How much carbon does he produce by breathing? He’s a waste of blood and organs.

  16. My wife sent me a picture of her full Irish this morning and I got a pang of homesickness.

But between this and uncle Eamon’s shower suggestion I’m feeling much better about emigrating. Cheers Greens!

  17. Why do the greens always get shit heaped when FF & FG are also rolling it out?

It’s like anytime this country hears about anything negative to do with green energy it’s the greens. But anything positive is the government.

    It’s bizarre

  18. Got to love the attitude of politicians saying carbon tax is not that much more added to the cost of living. Completely out of touch and once again the average joe gets shafted. Also it’s not just the greens pushing this – FF/FG are behind this push too for green taxes.

  19. I’m supportive of green energy but what Eamon Ryan crucially forgets is that changing our national infrastructure to renewable energy requires lots of funding. Driving further inflation by increasing carbon taxes at this time is only going to increase the possibility of a recession. Cannot build green infrastructure if the country is broke. Financial and economic awareness is obviously not one of his strengths.

  20. The irony of it all… You cant use fossil fuel because carbon.. Higher taxes on the use of vehicles… closed two power plants because they output carbon.. Had to reopen them because energy shortages.. pushing for Electric vehicles which leads to more demand on a failing energy grid.. wont build nuclear powerplants or more hydro power stations and still wont invest in new green tech to help reduce carbon fired power stations decency..

The solution more taxes on a population finding it harder and harder to stay afloat..

The verdict ? COMPLETLY OUT OF TOUCH WITH REALITY!

  21. Good luck with your carbon goals. If this shit with Ukraine and Russia keeps going past summer, people are going to be burning tyres in steel drums for heat.

  22. I’m seriously starting to worry for my mother with every single increase absolutely attacking her.

Going to have to see what schemes she can apply for that she’s not already on. Sitting here wondering how the actual fuck she managed to put clothes on our backs as kids.

  23. Free public transport, higher frequency, buy out and close all public carparks in city centers, introduce a congestion charge for driving into a city center, pedestrianisation of street around trinity collage and surrounding areas,… I would not be happy with any of this but it seems inevitable to me and will happen sooner rather then later…

  24. Anyone here know of Baker Electric cars? Uncle restores vintage cars and explained to me that only for Henry Ford undercutting the electric car industry in 1905 we wouldnt have half the issues we have now. Very basic description of what went on but there you go.

Fasinating bit of history the Electric,Steam and combustion car wars. Baker cars were actually a hire model similar to GoCar. They also had a 100 mile range on one charge, even had onstreet and home chargers. Over a hundred years before this EV mess just think of what advancements they would have made only for our greed.

  25. Can’t wait to see the amazing infrastructure which will obviously be put in place to combat climate change as a result of this extra tax….

  26. Every time I read comments about The Greens the more I think that there should be a financial incentive paid to people who complete an exam on how a country is run.

  27. Remember – politicians do not care about you. After income and consumption taxes most of your money goes to them. They a parasitic vermin and should treated as such.

  28. At what point do we go down to Woody’s and start building the guillotines? I think my junior cert woodworking could be of use.
