Today is German Unity Day (Tag der Deutschen Einheit). The Alexanderplatz demonstration was one of the largest demonstrations in East German history and a milestone of the peaceful revolution that led to the fall of the Berlin Wall and German reunification.

The photographer [Johan van Elk](https://www.flickr.com/photos/jmvanelk/3158905981/) has beautifully captured this historic event.
Note the two trams (un)loading passengers on the left side of the new photo. Multiple tram lines run through the pedestrian zone on Alexanderplatz. The Haus der Statistik / house of statistics that is hidden by the glass building on the right, has been an abandoned ruin for many years now. According to Wikipedia, it is supposed to be reconstructed and put back to use by 2024. On the ground, one can see the shadow of the Fernsehturm / TV tower, which is also mirrored in the glass facade behind the SATURN sign.
