I am an International student currently studying in Germany. Proir to coming Germany, my teeth alignment treatment (braces) was going but I had to come here so my treatment was left in between. Due to which my lower set of teeth were not properly aligned.

I brought a set of invisible retainers, which cracked little bit from front.

As I was not wearing it regularly, I am considering getting the permanent retainers, I have a few questions

  1. I would like to know how much does the dentist charge for permanent retainers?

  2. As my treatment was not finished, will they still put the permanent retainers if I ask them to?

  3. Is it included included in public health insurance?

At least in my experience a normal dentist doesn’t do stuff like that, that is something a Kieferorthopäde would do. Dunno the price for the retainers alone, mine had a complete package.

Usually doctors don’t like taking over treatments like that.

Unless your teeth are really seriously misaligned, no. In general coverage of public insurance is kinda shitty when it comes to teeth.

  2. You need a Kieferorthopäde for this.

    1. Minimum prices start at 2500 € (cheapest models)
    2. They will start treatment “from the beginning” in a sense of they will not follow up on Procedures supposed to follow based on foreign treatment plans (liability issue)
    3. No, has to be paid yourself if you don’t already have special insurances for this (Zahnzusatz mit Kieferortopähdie) . Retainers of any Kind are only paid by GKV or PKV if a jaw surgery is needed on top due to medical reasons

  3. What you mean by you bought a set? It’s supposed to be custom made for your teeth. You can order the same set any number of times by giving them the set number. I have done that. You will have to pay some import taxes. That’s all

  4. I had orthodontic treatment not in Germany. And then came to Germany and my retainer broke. This was 2019 or so.

I went to a Kieferorthipädie clinic and got plastic retainers (looks like invisalin) for… €360 or something a few years ago. I was offered permanent retainer wires on my top/bottom teeth behind the front teeth. That was…€600 per wire , i think. But this was before all the inflation of the past few years.

I hate flossing around the wire and I’m very disciplined about wearing removable retainers- so I got the latter.

You will have to pay out of pocket. Insurance will not pay for it.

Since you will pay immediately, they process should be fast. Doctors like private patients who pay upfront.

It’s been 6 years and my plastic retainers are still going strong.

BUT if your treatment is not finished, you might be looking at €1000s.

Mine was just maintenance/ no actual treatment required. Must say though, the orthodontist checked my teeth out and seemed a bit disappointed that my jaw/teeth looked excellent and there was no way he could tell me that I needed extra treatment.
