    China and the U.S. have agreed to pause their reciprocal tariffs for 90 days, with both sides bringing their rates down by 115 percent, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said following talks in Switzerland.

    This takes the tariffs imposed on Chinese goods by President Donald Trump down to 30 percent, and those imposed on U.S. goods by Beijing to 10 percent. They will continue negotiations during the pause.

  7. This is meaningless to businesses. 90 days is nothing and Trump can change his opinion any moment. The uncertainty is as bad as any tarrif in itself. It’s impossible to plan at the moment.

    This shit is crippling the US. Should companies look at buying goods elsewhere, should investors look to build factories in the US, should other countries with lower tarrifs build factories to trade with the US. Nobody fucking knows, most companies in the US are just waiting expecting everything to go back to the way it was which leaves your country in limbo. Trump “the great business man” (sarcasm) is destroying US business with his indecision.

  17. This is probably some weird way to pump and dump people into the economy. People are going to rush to buy anything and everything they want before the tariffs take effect again and then he will probably put them back again, and then rinse and repeat.

    Article only mentions the US treasury secretary as a source for this, with abscence of a declaration from a chinese official, which I remember getting lambasted on a previous post.

  40. I imagine this from US importer perspective.. why would i order something that i don’t know what tariff i will pay on it? Since cargo by ships takes like a month, there is no way to know if Trump will stick to this rate or change it again because his feelings were hurt before the 3 months are up. The risk to import simply seems too high, it’s like a casino (a badly run one).

    Friday, Trump said 80% seems right

    Monday, Trump says 10% (or is it 30%) and we’ll keep up this guessing game for another 90 days.

    Businesses can’t plan in this whirlwind of Trump’s constant chaos.

  43. Unlikely. If I were China, agreeing to a short-term pause would be undesirable. Why don’t we wait to see what the Chinese statement is before thinking they will also be pausing tariffs on their end? The Americans yo-yoing the tariffs they impose on themselves is, strangely, not news.
