    One could be forgiven for suspecting a plot was afoot when Putin suggested this meeting.
    Perhaps Thursday did not allow enough time for these ulterior motives to come to fruition.

  10. When zelensky elevated Putin’s shameful poor faith overtures, likely to maintain a positive relation with Trump, to a head of states meeting with a set time and place he outplayed putin. Putin is backed into a corner where every move he makes just ends up in weakness.

    Putin cannot go to Turkey and get a result he desire. He then appears weak at home, abroad he’s a bit of a joke but it will only be further seen as weakness.

    Ukraine shows a real desire for peace, albeit likely aware that most of their proposals like this meeting and the proposed 30km dmz like zone are a no go for putin.

    Putin will look weak if he goes to Turkey, he will look bad and weak if he goes simply because his demands are nonsensical and he is not in the necessary position of strength to enforce them. Coming home with nothing is hard to spin.

    Meanwhile the whole idea of negotiations stem from an increasingly weakened Russian position in general and Putin’s lacking off ramp in particular. The economy is not doing great, growth is fueled by the war economy and the state is running out if liquidity (state funds, oil/gas income decreasing).

    The regime is in a suboptimal position and will be so until it suddenly is in a dire position where internal stability will have to be judged in relation to external interests such as the Ukraine war.

    Let’s hope Russia gets desperate enough to enter negotiations in good faith. Until and beyond this point we ought continue and increase our efforts to support Ukraine.

    Ukraine is hurting, but Russia has already lost this war and the medium to long term consequences will be harsh.
