What do would-be popes eat?👀 • FRANCE 24 English

Everything is strictly controlled during the conclave, even cardinals food. On Wednesday, May 7th, the conclaveate will begin. The term conclave comes from the Latin kumlav, meaning with a key, as all the 133 nominated cardinals would be completely secluded within the Vatican until the new pope is elected. And historically, food has posed a potential risk. messages could be hidden inside dishes and there were fears of poisoning as the papacy has always been a highly influential political rule. That’s why over the centuries the Vatican has introduced strict food laws. Since 1274, pies and chickens have been banned to prevent hidden notes. Wine and water had to be served in transparent glassware and even clothed napkins were open and inspected by papa Swiss guards. For this conclave, cardinals will eat at the Kaza Santa Marta near the Sistine Chapel. Neither they nor the kitchen staff nor anyone inside the Vatican is allowed any contact with the outside world. Phones and electronic devices are prohibited as our newspapers. All movement in and out is monitored by Vatican security and everyone involved, even drivers and cleaners, must take an oath of secrecy and swear not to use any audio or video equipment and that there won’t be any outside interference during the election period. If any cardinal breaks the oath, the punishment is excommunication. Finally, this year’s conclave diet will consist of simple Italian dishes, especially from the Roman tradition. And once again, everything will be carefully inspected.

Today, Wednesday 7th May, the conclave begins, bringing with it a strict set of rules that must be observed not only by the cardinals but also by everyone working within the Vatican. These regulations will remain in place until a new Pope is elected. Among them are rules concerning food as well… 🍝
