  1. They have legitimate reason to. They wanted to talk if the latest tariffs were withdrawn [or paused] and U.S. did just that.

  2. Yes, and no. Yes, in that you temporarily got Trump to back down. Yes, in that you temporarily greased something enough to get some orders through now, and don’t paralyze the key supply lines 3, 6, 9 months down the road, including the all-important Christmas sales period. No, in that a 90 day pause is something Trump will start whining hard in 60 days, and you’re back to square one. No, in that you allowed Trump to save enough face where none were merited.

On the balance, a win – fully acknowledged. Most certainly not a huge win, and it’s temporary at best.

  3. China walked us like a dog.

We had to sit, stay and wait for our treats.

  4. Trump is a win for china generally, guy is actively handing the keys to the world economy to China.

  5. so Americans get to pay 30% tax more on imports from China for no good reason

  6. Trump: They’ll buckle under the pressure!
    China: Fuck you.
    Trump: We’ll increase the tariffs!
    China: Fuck you.
Trump: We’re working it out… very productive!
    China: Fuck you.
    Trump: We could lower tariffs!
    China: Fuck you.
Trump: We’ve worked out a wonderful deal! All is normal again!
China: Glad you got the message.

  7. What “deal”, there’s literally no deal.

Trump claimed he was going to impose absurdly high tarrifs. China called his bluff. The US waited until the exact day that ZERO container ships had left China for US ports for the 1st time since covid, and then announced “okay we’re taking the tarriffs back down”.

He bluffed then folded. He got ZERO changes in return.

It’s dishonest to refer to that as a “deal”.

  8. Are China also allowing for export of rare-earths again or is this only a tariffs reduction?

  9. At least, we will be able to avoid having empty shelves. I still remember how crazy it was during the covid-19 days. Imaging how much worse it could be if everything turns into an egg war

  10. I expected Trump to be the first one to blink and he did. Yup, an emperor with no clothes.

  11. >In the eyes of the Chinese public, negotiators from Beijing appear to have convinced President [Donald Trump’s](https://www.cnbc.com/donald-trump/) administration to roll back most of the 145%[ tariff](https://www.cnbc.com/2025/05/12/us-and-china-agree-to-slash-tariffs-for-90-days.html) rate that Trump imposed, and slash them to 30%.

    The ol’ [Anchoring](https://www.pon.harvard.edu/daily/negotiation-skills-daily/what-is-anchoring-in-negotiation/) sales tactic:

    “How much?”

    “250”

    “250?! 😲 Can you do 200?”

    “I can do 240”

    “220”

    “230”

    “Deal!”

    **…original price: 150*

  12. Both the United States and China need each other, and if they work together big changes can come to the world. Time to reset the world order so all nations can prosper.

  13. Of course it’s a huge win for China. Everything trump touches turns to shit. He’s no deal maker, he’s a deal looser.

  14. It is. Not only because Trump has backed off but because of the reasons Trump has backed off. That he has been under pressure from the billionaires as well as the everyday people, including MAGA. While he is hurting the nation, the economy and the people China has an excuse to use tariffs to protects its upcoming economy.

  15. It’s not like China was dealing with a brilliant negotiator. He might have been before his decline from senility. I’m sure they took him to cleaners. He just keeps trying to bluff everyone, and no one is blinking.

  16. Well yeah because it is.

America is losing left and right on these policies.

  17. someone should have a look who actually benefits from all this. trump literally crashed the stock market and then gave it a surge. some will get incredibly wealthy from that. and its probably trumps buddies, and possibly himself too.

  18. People, im not a huge trump guy, but if its true that China will accept 30% tariffs on their products with no to little counter-tariffs, it seems that Trump got his way.

It will definitively help the balance of payments a bit. But will it bring back manufacturing and encourage foreign direct investment or will it simply make capital goods and parts more expensive for industry, making things worse? Will inland america feel job and salary growth so amazing they can put up with increased consumer good prices? That’s the real question.

  19. How? This feels like a win for Washington.

I was convinced China was going to be on the winning side of this. It doesn’t appear so.

  20. And China is still is not buying pork or soy beans and Boeing planes. So we got nothing for it

  21. Im no Trumpist, but its clear to me as an outsider to the USA that clearly trump got the upper hand in the negotiations with china. yes, the americans were getting worried but by and large, didnt feel the impact of his tariffs as retailers and businesses worked off of existing stocks and banked on the trade war not lasting long. china however saw massive layoffs and had numerous small banks default. china has been going on a massive deficit spending campaign to try and hold things together and it barely moved the needle.

china got worried because it saw that europe/canada/australia/japan/korea were not willing to absorb their export surplus and that middle east and south american nations were preparing their own protectionist measures to defend their economies from the massive selloff.

Trump got the chinese to accept a higher tariff than originally without reciprocating ( and everyone knows that before those 90 days are up, trump will have a meltdown and try to increase them further). In order to do this, trump burned down an incredible ammount of goddwill (which i cant understand, because if he had coordinated tariffs with the EU and other “western” nations, they could have made china their bitch), i personally dont think the investment was worth it, too expensive for too little reward. however its clear, china got the short end of the stick in the deal, people should stop doomposting about a chinese global order and start actually fighting trump on the issues which matter ( LIKE THE FACT HES CHOOSING TO IGNORE RULINGS OF THE SUPREME COURT AND DENYING CITIZENS DUE PROCESS)

  22. I like how thirty percent is absolutely too small to bring any extra work over from China while also too large to avoid inflation

  23. Cause they call his dumbass bluff and he sat the fk down.

    What a joke.

  24. The new Chinese nickname in some subs for trump is
    川建国,
Which roughly translates to “Trump, the one who builds a nation”, referring to him building the Chinese Nation.
Also comrade Trump, 川同志 comes to mind.

  25. Trump is braindead. Negotiator my ass. He’s an actor, and a bad one at that.

  26. The biggest losers are the Chinese and American people. The net result is a 30% tariff, paid for by American importers (and most likely some or all of it passed down to the American consumer), and Chinese manufacturers who will see a reduction in demand. There are no winners in this situation.

  27. The prices are going to stay up, and so we pay more for the same goods. The art of the deal, folks.

  28. Everything that has happened since January has been a huge win for Beijing.

  29. >China is casting the trade agreement with the U.S. as a victory.

Well of course they are. So will Trump. It doesn’t mean it is though.

  30. Wait Trump said he made a Great deal for Americans… they can’t both be right

  31. It is.
America hurts its alliance system. China exposes the weakness of Washington.
    Big win for China.

  32. At this rate, just drop the traffic to 0 or 10, let me stock up on some supplies first

  33. they totally did win ! trump whines and bitches and when they take it out and measure it … well stormy was right “acorn on a fur coat”
