Brazil’s LC Terminais plans to invest approximately 620mn reais (US$108mn) in its Maranhão state liquefied natural gas regasification project (TGNL), a source close to the matter told BNamericas.
LC, which belongs to the Lyon Capital group, expects to start the terminal’s construction in October 2026 and begin operations by October 2028.
Environmental and other licenses are still being processed, and the installation phase depends on the issuance of a preliminary license from federal environmental regulator Ibama.
After holding a public hearing on the undertakings, Ibama requested complementary studies on marine fauna and socio-environmental aspects.
Located on Boa Razão island in São Marcos bay, TGNL will be able to store 150,000m3 of LNG and regasify up to 23.8Mm3/d (million cubic meters per day).
The terminal is expected to become a hub for LNG imports and potentially support production fields in Maranhão and the northeast region, optimizing gas distribution and strengthening the region’s energy grid.
The project involves the construction of an island-type pier, where a floating storage regasification unit (FSRU) will remain permanently moored.
The FSRU will be able to receive LNG carriers with capacity of up to 170,000m3, whether imported or produced domestically.
