Angry stranger has opinion. Hard hitting journalism.
Prince Will said it’s up to the people to dictate who rules them.
Well said, let’s have a referendum.
Their soft power is certainly waning, at least overseas. They still have a lot of support in the UK though, along with enough indifference, to avoid being kicked out any time soon. I’m 30 and it might happen within my lifetime, especially as people slowly forget the Queen and Charles and Camilla take over. Republicanism is still not as big amongst the general public as it is on Reddit though, nor as this article hints. It is reported as news because of the strength of his opinion, not because the tide is turning.
He also made some unproven comments about water being wet.
They don’t work, or pay conventional taxes, live in castles and palaces and go on world tours to celebrate their opulence.
It’s not unreasonable to accept that some people ain’t OK with that given how things are right now.
The Queen will die soon and I think that will be the tipping point for this archaic nonsense.
LBC does love to give idiots a soapbox, lol.
TBH any media company that calls itself ‘Leading Britains Conversation’ should be very much avoided, along with anything linked to them.
The queen should be the last as far as I’m concerned, I can’t think of a more awful life for the people who are royal, and I don’t accept the whole concept.
My views on the royals have changed a lot. From supporter (thinking they did more good then harm) to the shit show with Andrew Winsor.
If he thinks it’s upto the people who rules them I’m happy to bump them down and the salarys they have to that of a diplomat. They are then more then happy to run for president of the country 🤷♂️
If You’re going to claim a “god given right” to rule, I wholeheartedly expect you to be the definition of greatful, you shouldn’t be beyond reproach. You should be the definition of squeeky clean and 100% open book. You want me to be a supporter of the royals again, it starts with, getting Andrew in an airplane and in the sky’s to America to stand trial. Or have Andrew pay everyone he’s never met 20 odd million.
I would say Randy Andy’s teenage pumping antics on his convicted paedo mate’s fuck-island isn’t helping in cementing support for the Royals.
If we got to vote over the stupid idea of Brexit we should absolutely have the ability to vote whether we want a monarchy!
Sure, the Royals are your problem….LOL, surely not the folks you elected to office to do whatever their Russian buddies want or is that the Mega-Corporation donors who are making sure UK has little money or support in the population.
But, yeah, the royals need to be beat up… helps avoid the real problems caused, created, manufactured by the ruling rubes of the chamber.
‘Caller rages’
Lmao. I guess we’ll have to start quoting TalkSport soon.
I’m no expert so take my quick research with a pinch of salt. But this seems like something worth keeping, that does little to no harm? (Prince andrew aside) and quite a lot of good?
They’re not wrong, given the choice I’d send the Royals to the jobcentre
idk they do provide significant income back into the government, and a key hotspot for tourism
He’s 100% right. Those scroungers live a life of extreme luxury – paid for by you & I, due to simply being born into that family.
And before any of their sycophants try to label “all of the diplomatic work they do”, as hard work – it isn’t. Making small talk with heads of state isn’t hard work. Barely even work. Go pack boxes in an Amazon warehouse for 12 hours. Or stack shelves. Or lay bricks. Or deliver post in summer or winter. That’s hard work
The royal family is a relic of the ancient past that should be discarded ASAP.
A family who made their money through centuries of exploitation, who are born to life of privilege and power based on the owner of the genitals who created them. Bizzare to have a head of state who is chosen by a mythical god rather than by the people who they claim to represent.
Hereditary and Unelected.
No place or need for a institution like this
In the 21st Century.
The entire aristocracy are scroungers and should go
Their lands are theirs through conquest in 1066 and successive “hand me downs” and changes in royal families (Normans, Plantagenets, Tudors, Stuarts, Hanover’s, Saxe-Coburg and Gothe/Windsor). If we get rid of them, and take back the lands (which in itself wouldn’t be legal anyway), we have to rely on government to keep them. Chances are, they’d sell it on for profit.
I don’t mind there being a royal family for the sake of show, but how their funded is a discussion that needs to be had. Particularly at a time when people are seriously struggling.
Don’t they make more money in tourism than they cost the public? I heard that once. Treat them like a novelty. I don’t give a shit one way or another if the Queen is on my money in Canada or not. It’s all pretend bullshit these days.
They’ll stay in place as long as the Head of the Family and Heir takes the position seriously they be popular enough with the British Public to be unassailable.
From a practical perspective a non-political Head of State is a great thing, certainly as has been seen in my 40 odd years.
I don’t know anyone that would vote to have another politician in their lives. Part of the reason why the ECC/EU was so unpopular was the idea that the was another level of politicians that people had no say over.
This might be an unpopular opinion but people who focus on replacing the monarchy should actually be focusing on Lords reform. That’s the system that is really broken, when persons donate to a party end up getting made life peers and being able to vote in the Lords.
I also think that no sitting Prime Minister would be onboard with moving away from a constitutional monarchy because of the potentially stability issues of head of state changing every few years, as well as the head of state not necessarily tied to the same party as the PM. Finally the main reason, the potential of the PM post losing powers over a head of state.
I would rather see Lords reform first before looking at head of state reform.
But it’s not tax payers money.
Don’t get me wrong, if every single one of them died today, I doubt I’d shed a single tear.
But it’s not taxpayers money, it’s income from the Crown Estate, along with income from the Duchy of Lancaster, and the Duchy of Cornwall.
Given how much the Tories love privatisation, I can guarantee that if we’d abolished the monarchy at any point in the last 200 years – that the crown estate and the Duchies would not be in public ownership, and therefore we would not be getting any benefit from it at all.
And if they did all die tonight and the government decided it was a great time to abolish “The Crown” – then the crown estate would be entirely in private hands within 10 years, probably before the next election in 2024 even.
As things stand, the Crown Estate puts billions into the public purse.
Don’t be so naive that the Tories would allow that to continue when they see such an opportunity to line their own pockets and those of their mates too.
iirc, don’t the royals generate more worth/value in tourism than they do in what they get from the gov?
that said, they’re independently wealthy as well so
I’m sure they make more than up for it in terms of tourist revenue anyway so who cares?
Amen. They’re a stain on the country and a national embarrassment. Nothing but disgusting, selfish narcissists who don’t use their influence and voice for anything other than bragging about their wealth
It’s 2022 wtf are we doing with kings and queens? It perpetuates the class system, is frankly insulting to so many who have so little, they literally do nothing for us and so many have been bad. I think the Queen has done an admirable job but this has to end. It’s unfair, undemocratic and frankly ridiculous
Fully support those in direct ascension to the throne. Charles, William, George and their respective families. I actually think Charles and William will make great kings. I feel they’re a force for good. Their positions are extremely difficult with all that goes in in a too big royal family.
I am not happy about paying for Andrew or Harry etc and think if the family we pay for was smaller we’d have a much smaller problem with this.
As a stranger, please do not abolish your Royal House. It gives your country a strong sense of national identity and pride. And let s not forget about the huge amount of tourism it brings. You WILL regret it if you do it. Mark my words. Around 70% of my people do regret it.
Absolutely. What lesson are we teaching kids when we say this particular family is more important than others.
Why because their ancestors killed more people, kept others in poverty and ruled simply because they felt entitled.
Do away with the monarchy what a joke.
One person calls a phone-in show and says something and this is news? Why not go straight to *”man in pub reckons…”*?
When the queen dies the royal family should go. I wanna be your tampon, his sex offender brother and their tone death children should all just disappear and let the country move on
Hardly surprised to see that this thread got brigaded to the top of the subreddit this morning. The anti-Royal group and their Tory backers are really trying to push this misinformation agenda.
Not a big fan of the monarchy, but the real issue is how long are people going to blame their personal circumstances on something that happened 200 years ago?
How about Jamaica grows their own economy instead of blaming Britain.

The work they do is to benefit the country. They’re essentially paid celebrities that entice tourism and try and have a morally correct stance towards what they need to. They also are part of tradition.
The cost of keeping the royal family by a quick google is 350m. The tories managed to piss away 9bn on PPE during the pandemic. That would pay for the royal family for the next 25 years. Source: [Cost of royals](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Finances_of_the_British_royal_family), [Waste of PPE value](https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2022/feb/01/department-of-health-writes-off-9bn-spent-in-uk-covid-ppe-drive)
Another quick google says that they make about 19bn for the country in tourism per year. [Source](https://www.getreading.co.uk/news/uk-world-news/how-much-money-royal-family-20757359)
