  1. On the other hand, his reponse of “willing to consider something” may be the typical KGB speech, of not having anything to do with your real intentions. As in: we’ll never know for 100% sure.

  2. Well didn’t the USSR apply for joining NATO early on when NATO itself was founded? And they knew they would be rejected so they could have an argument in creating their own military bloc(the Warsaw pact).

  3. No one should be fooled. There was/is no good version of Vladimir Putin. The man is a grifter and a crook through and through.

  4. Guardian showing its true colours again. This is not news and it should be hardly surprising to anyone even if the sentiment was there. What better way to cripple an organisation than from the inside? Look at the UN – castrated to its core thanks to Russia and China.

  5. >Putin joins NATO

    >Gonna move some russian troops to East-Europe to protect my new allies.

  6. Early in Putin’s first term, he tried to emulate Tony Blair and cozy up with the west and America. Turns out America wanted to keep its pretext for militarizing Europe with American bases and thus had a vested interest in keeping Russia out of Nato, and continuing to operate as if they were gearing to fight the USSR. Russian government would have likely been its corrupt self regardless of whether it were friendly with the west or not, but the fact that we today consider a country with as small of an economy as this to be some big scary power comparable to China is the result of this antagonism.
