  1. I’m surprised about the number of pure student towers going up recently. At least 4 more that i know of in that vicinity.

  2. >The council had received only two objections from local residents in response to the plans

This whole story is indicative of what’s wrong with our planning system. A housing project rejected even though only 2 people even cared enough to say they didn’t want it. Madness…

  3. This is the one that I posted about last year I think when it got rejected.

    https://www.reddit.com/r/london/comments/1gr6nq2/another_reason_why_building_takes_ages_in/

Certain Tower Hamlet councillors rejected it and said they’d need to inspect the site first and was using a load of rubbish reasoning to be against it. Then a minute later the planning officers in the meeting said the councillors had already been invited to a site visit but they didn’t turn up or respond to the invite. Quite embarrasing.

Some of the other bs reasoning gave was things like lack of parking despite the building being car free. Noise complaints despite everything around it being built recently and a student building was planned to go there. Also they said the borough needs more homes for families, but another councillor rightly pointed out that by having these 1,000 new student rooms it’ll free up demand from them renting family homes in the area so those can be used for families instead.

4 out of 9 councillors did vote for yes for it and one of them even said the council should just vote yes because all thats gonna happen is it’ll get dragged through appeal and then City Hall will approve it and the council would have wasted money. And yep looks like they were spot on.

It was the Aspire councillors who were against it and giving the BS reasoning of course. The 2 councillors who were being logical were the Labour councillors. Aspire needs to be kicked out.

Theres 1 good reason against student housing which is that they dont provide council tax income(which should be changed, even if its 1/4 the normal rate), but the aspire councillors didn’t give this reason.

  4. When demand for actual houses in Tower Hamlets is so high. So many people live in cramped damp accommodation, and international student numbers are falling.

A new build solely for extremely short tenancies, with tiny bedrooms, shared kitchens, and so on, doesn’t seem appropriate. And is in no way helping London meet its housing targets.

But at least the investors and those whose pensions are greased make a killing.

Also the council tax exemption adds to everyone else’s bills.

What are the plus points again?

  5. Insane that only a few residents can block development like this.

  6. We need tower blocks. But also we need gentle increase in density. Replacing semi detached 2-3 story house roads with townhouse style 5-8 storey homes/flats. This should be the goal in all of zone 1 and 2 within 10 min walk from a station.

  7. Student accom in Canary Wharf does seem a little odd. I mean, if there’s demand, why not? But quite a place to live as a student…

  8. If the council wants to they should just wait for them to build it and then blow it up so then it’s not there anymore 👍
