Most common prescription drugs mentioned in hip hop [OC]

  1. I know this is prescriptions but I’d like to see how non-prescription stacks up, either legal (I’m sure alcohol is most mentioned and most deaths but probably not by immediate OD), or illegal (cannabis is probably high mentions but almost zero OD)

  2. Why is it a continuous line when they are distinct items. On first glance this looks like a trend over time.

  3. This graph needs a lot of work.
    What’s the y axis?
    Annual prescriptions/ODs….over what time period?
Without this info it is kind of useless.

Edit: And why are annual prescriptions and ODs graphed like they’re continuous variables over the x axis?

  4. Someone please explain what is beautiful here?
No y labels, line drawn over non continuous x axis, fade in pink stuff indicating nothing, having colour and style both differentiating the same information, likely mixing different y axis with the different groups.

  5. * No values on y-axis
    * Why are bar and line charts mixed? What links the sequence of Codine to Xanax to Percocet and on? If there is a sequence, why are mentions in a bar chart? If not, why are the other categories in a line chart?
    * More than the above, why is one line chart smoothed? What outliers or artifacts is the chart trying to soften? Why is that valuable vs the loss of data (see Xanax/Percocet)
    * Most importantly, where is the medical data from? How do you determine what is “rap/hip hop” music? How are mentions counted?

Other than looking like an 1993 disposable cup, I don’t see the purpose of this chart, or anything particularly beautiful about it. Perhaps the data is intriguing, but the chart doesn’t clarify or expose it. Which means the only aesthetics are the chart itself, which for the above reasons, I find lacking.
