Morgan, Montgomery, Edwards To Be Formally Inducted Thursday
Three prominent members of the Cal Athletics community will be formally inducted into the Bay Area Sports Hall of Fame on Thursday.
Former Golden Bear women’s soccer star Alex Morgan, former men’s basketball head coach Mike Montgomery and civil rights activist and sports sociology Professor Emeritus Dr. Harry Edwards are among the class of 2025 that was previously announced in February and will be honored at the BASHOF Enshrinement Dinner.
Morgan was an All-American and four-time All-Pac-10 selection at Cal before moving on to put together one of the most accomplished international careers in U.S. history. Morgan appeared in three Olympic Games, including a gold-medal performance in 2012. She also led the United Stats to a pair of World Cup championships.
Montgomery guided the Bears’ men’s basketball program to one of its most successful stretches in history, amassing 130 wins over a six-year span. His stewardship included four NCAA Tournament appearances and two NIT berths, as well as the 2010 Pac-12 regular-season championship – Cal’s first in 50 years. Montgomery coached three conference players of the year – Jerome Randle (2010), Jorge Gutierrez (2012) and Allen Crabbe (2013). Montgomery also served as the head coach at Stanford and for the Golden State Warriors.
Edwards was a professor in Cal’s sociology department for 30 years and is considered a pioneer in the study of the sociology of sport – especially in the context of the African American experience. Among his better-known accomplishments was his creation of the Olympic Project for Human Rights, a movement designed to call attention to racism at the 1968 Summer Games in Mexico City and culminated with iconic raised fists by American sprinters Tommie Smith and John Carlos on the medal stand.
Thursday’s BASHOF Hall of Fame Enshrinement Dinner takes place at the Hyatt Regency Embarcadero in downtown San Francisco.
