Mexico sues Google for labeling Gulf of Mexico as ‘Gulf of America’ • FRANCE 24 English

Yes, she threatened legal action against Google back in February over its labeling of the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America on Google Maps for US. President Claudia Shinbal has now announced that Mexico is following through on that warning. Google is already being sued. There has already been a first resolution and it is being awaited. Shane Balm insists that Donald Trump’s executive order in January to rename the Gulf applies only to the US section of the continental shelf. What we are saying is that Google should put the Gulf of America where it is the Gulf of America, which is the part that corresponds to the territory of the United States, and then put the Gulf of Mexico to the territorial part that corresponds to Mexico and Cuba. Google has previously argued that it made the change in line with a practice of following name changes when altered by official government sources. Shane Bomb’s announcement comes after the Republican le house of representatives voted earlier this week to formalize the name change for federal agencies. On this vote, the yays are 211. The nays are 206. The bill is passed without objection. The measure is unlikely to be given the green light by the Senate. Trump has contended that his order was justified as the US quote do most of the work there and it’s ours. Critics argue the move is in line with his expansionist aims which include threatening to seize control of Greenland. The water has been referred to as the Gulf of Mexico for more than four centuries and is internationally recognized as such.

Mexico has sued tech giant Google over its labelling of the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America, a change made by US President Donald Trump via executive order, Mexico President Claudia Sheinbaum said on May 9. Sheinbaum did not provide details of the lawsuit during her daily press briefing, but said that Google had been sued.

  2. Wow! If the leaders of a country fight over such an insignificant thing as a name, what hope is there for it’s people. There’s so many more and bigger issues than this. How petty and how completely sad. We. Are. All. Doomed. The world is a sad, sad place. The name of a gulf doesn’t change anything. Focus on real changes (which will unfortunately not happen). Lord, help us all for we honestly do not know what we do 😔

  14. Floridian here. I'm still calling it the Gulf of Mexico. Trump seems to forget that the US's authority of the body of water goes only 12 nautical miles from our coast and that parts of Mexico are by the Gulf as well. The American federal government should have higher priorities than this nonsense.

  24. Gulf of America??? why not when lot of Mexicans immigrate to US. asking US to takeover Mexico's resources for cost exchange for free healthcare, job provide, free school, safety etc… this is very much a good will greet to US atleast Mexicans do what usa is offering them in return
