VP JD Vance speaks on fallen Hamilton County deputy, defends police actions
This week is National Police Week and Vice President JD Vance joined officers for a breakfast Wednesday, where he talked about fallen deputy Larry Henderson.Vance hosted a breakfast with members of state and local law enforcement at the Naval Observatory to celebrate National Police Week.During the breakfast, he spoke about the death of deputy Larry Henderson, who was hit and killed in the line of duty. Police said the man who hit him is Rodney Hinton Jr., the father of 18-year-old Ryan Hinton, who was shot and killed by a Cincinnati police officer a day prior.”Just a few days ago, we lost an officer in Cincinnati and the story there is actually worth telling in full because it’s worth appreciating exactly what happened,” Vance said.Vance talked about the death of deputy Henderson and the police shooting that happened a day prior. Vance called the actions of the officer who shot Hinton, “totally justified.”” I actually first heard about this from — from my wife, our lovely second lady, who — who told me that, you know, a few weeks ago, I guess, a man was killed by a police officer. The police officer, the body cam footage showed, was totally justified. He was doing his job and keeping the people of Cincinnati safe,” Vance said.He went on to talk about the death of Henderson, who police say was hit and killed by Ryan Hinton’s father, Rodney Hinton Jr.”And the gentleman who was killed, his father started to hate police because of it. And maybe he already hated police before then, but he decided he wanted to take revenge on police — not even on the officer who took the life of his son, but on a totally different police officer, just to exact revenge against the police in that area of the country, which, of course, is my hometown.,” Vance said.Vance continued, saying he thinks a lot of the blame for the “senseless crime” falls on American leadership. “And when I think about why that senseless crime happened, obviously, you’ve got to place blame on the guy who committed the crime, but I also think a lot of the blame falls on American leadership who, for too long, have made our police officers out to be enemies, instead of the great public servants that all of us know that they are,” Vance said.
