Cassie was the witness everyone had been waiting for. Singer Cassandra Ventura took the stand in a Manhattan courtroom, calmly detailing the decade of alleged abuse she endured at the hands of her ex-boyfriend Sha Diddy Combmes. The court was shown disturbing surveillance footage from a hotel in LA in 2016 where Combmes can be seen beating and dragging her across the floor. He would bash on my head, knock me over, drag me and kick me, stomp me in the head when I was down. Shawn controlled a lot of my life, whether it was my career, the way I dressed. Ventura was only 19 when she met the hip hop mogul. In 2005, he was already at the peak of his career and soon signed her to a 10 album deal with his Bad Boy Records label. For years, Cassie alleges Combmes forced her to take part in daysong sexual encounters with male prostitutes, which he directed, watched, and often filmed. She says she took drugs to dissociate from the experience. I felt disgusting. I felt humiliated. I was just in love and wanted to make him happy. Over time, if I didn’t do it, materials would be hung over my head or it would become public. Ventura was the first to file a civil lawsuit against Combmes for assault and rape in 2023, which was quickly settled out of court. But her testimony prompted dozens of other women and men to come forward, culminating in this trial. Combmes has pleaded not guilty to charges that include racketeering, conspiracy, sex trafficking, and transportation to engage in prostitution.
