Why not sure. Those people mostly have over paid for those jacked up hatch backs anyway so they have plenty of money
Is an SUV a Range Rover or an X5?
A Golf with a high roof surely isn’t classed as an SUV?
Middle Class in their Nissan Qashqai up to no good…
Remember the greens told them all to buy diesel cars and that turned out to be wrong…
… and 2 charges for every 20,000 cars.
When’s the election?
Ah yes, the SUV is wrong not the lack of affordable electric cars due to tax being over 30% of its price….
Edit: correct percentage
Surely it would be more beneficial to adjust the basis for commercial tax.
Can’t tell how sick I am of watching yummy mummies driving Tiguans and X5s while claiming business tax.
Just adjust the rules for Vans, Hiluxs, Navarro’s and Rangers and actual work vehicles to be taxable at commercial rates.
There is merit in examining the full energy consumption of products from cradle to grave. Unfortunately the body shape has little to with it. A small ICE SUV could be 1.5 tons, an electric saloon could be almost 1 ton heavier in some instances e.g. Porsche Taycan.
Energy consumption during use is just one part of the equation. Under current policy, which the Greens had a part in shaping, a 2,300kg electric vehicle is considered to be green, while a 1,000kg petrol/diesel is taxed at a higher rate (VRT and motor tax). This is idiotic as the electric vehicle is the cause of greater greenhouse emissions during both manufacture and scrap.
Tax the fucking things off the road.
Taxation is always the answer…
Eamon Ryan is hands down one of the most intelligent humans to every walk this planet, we need to keep than man a national secret or Americans will try take him for themselves
What is an SUV-style vehicle? I can name a dozen SUVs but how would the Government define such a vehicle in a hard and fast way for taxation? Size, height, weight, fuel consumption, internal cabin volume? Simply slapping a tax on “SUVs” will just lead to the industry finding a new name for them.
Just buy an estate loads of room and cheaper
Would the green party ever fuck off, nothing they have done has helped the environment.
>He said the rise in bills is a shock to everybody
No it wasn’t, this has been an issue since last year, energy prices went up by 25% last year. Only person shocked is this sleepy bollix that he actually has to do something.
Isn’t there already significant emissions based taxation? If SUVs are massively more polluting than regular cars, that should be fixable with the current system.
Unless for some odd reason a high performance sports car should be taxed less than a family SUV that makes the same amount of pollution?
Ah is there any ideas other than taxation in the Green Party armoury
What is with this country and taxes? Jesus Christ. Will they fuck off.
I think they will find their shite diesel buses and trains cause more air quality deaths
Just fuck off. I’m no fan of crossovers, proper jeeps are fine, but taxing them based solely on aesthetics is bollocks.
We had a electric car when we rented in Dublin.
Couldn’t afford to buy a house in Dublin because of the housing shortage. We moved to a more rural area because it’s what we could afford.
Outside of Dublin the infrastructure for electric cars isn’t what it should be. Also the distances we need to travel now in a more rural setting don’t suit the cheaper ev cars. Ie the earlier version of the leaf and Zoe. Range anxiety.
We bought a Sportage. The higher suspension was to help with a child seat for a child we were planning to have. That hasn’t worked out yet. The 1.6 diesel was to allow us to get around our more rural setting and the larger commute after being based outside of a city.
If Eamonn Ryan and his party tries to punish me and my future family because we can’t afford to live in the Dublin area where biking and public transport works he can fuck right off.
I lived in Dublin for long enough and I know obnoxious pricks who drive huge cars and are a bane to any regular commuter.
We tried our best and commited to an early adapter technology that didn’t work out when we were forced out of Dublin because we don’t work for a tech firm or a consultancy firm.
Now the govt wants to punish us because we didn’t want to PCP an overpriced newer EV.
Honestly sometimes I wish we had never come back from OZ.
To be honest, I don’t get how anyone can afford the fuel for these fecking things
I fucking hate Ford Raptors. So unnecessarily big and for only a few people
Wait wait wait. Some suvs are more efficient than their estate counterparts. The SUV body shape also allows for more efficient hybrids and EVs.
This is just a targeted “Let’s charge SUVs” rather than “Let’s charge by actual emissions THE ACTUAL THING THAT DAMAGES THE ENVIROMENT”
I feel they might be poking their core voters right in the eye if they did this.
More taxes from the party that brought you more taxes!
Fuckin greens fuckin with car tax again!! The think most people forget what they did the last time they were in govt but some of us don’t – cash grab/tax increase to put useful vehicles off the road/make them unviable – 90% of co2 is in the manufacture so this is just wasteful by the greens. Btw I have a focus
Honestly who voted for these wankers? I can’t get the big shop on a bike.
