Charlotte expects economic benefits from hosting the PGA Championship at Quail Hollow, highlighting its capacity to host high-profile sports events.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The PGA Championship returning to Quail Hollow this week represents far more than elite golf competition — it’s poised to deliver a substantial economic windfall for Charlotte, kicking off what city officials describe as an unprecedented summer for sports events in the region.

“The PGA Championship and events like it put Charlotte truly on a global stage,” Steve Bagwell, CEO of the Charlotte Regional Visitors Authority, said in a recent interview.

The tournament’s economic impact is expected to be significant, following established patterns from previous major golf events.

“In 2017, the PGA Championship brought $100 million to our community,” Bagwell noted, adding that the more recent President’s Cup in 2022 generated an even more impressive $131 million.

This economic boost extends well beyond ticket sales, touching virtually every sector of Charlotte’s economy.

“Transportation, shuttle services, parking, food and beverage, working on those hospitality locations within the tournament, local vendors doing that,” Bagwell explained, describing the widespread business opportunities created by the event.

Beyond immediate financial benefits, the tournament — which drew approximately 5 million viewers last year — offers Charlotte invaluable international exposure.

“It reinforces our reputation as a premier sports city that can host high-profile events,” Bagwell said. “It demonstrates the capabilities of our community to have visitors come in and have a great time in our destination.”

The PGA Championship continues what has already been a remarkable year for major sporting events in Charlotte. In March, the Spectrum Center downtown hosted the ACC Tournament, and next month, Bank of America Stadium will welcome four FIFA Club World Cup matches featuring some of soccer’s top clubs.

“This is a catalyst for future growth, there’s no doubt about that,” Bagwell concluded, highlighting how these high-profile events contribute to Charlotte’s growing reputation as a world-class sports destination.
