This wasp was near my garden and it is the biggest insect of this type that I have seen. It was about 2 cm long and I could hear it chewing on the wood it landed on.

Any ideas what it is?

  1. Could it be a Hornet?

They look scary, but are pretty chill, AND they keep the area free from wasps.

  2. I had hornets exactly twice at my parents’.
Both summers were wasp and mosquito free and nobody tried to steal our cake when we had coffee on the porch.
    Total bliss.

  3. It is a Hornet and it is collecting dead wood to make some nice paper for its hive.
They are super cool unless u annoy them and they eat wasps, mosquitos, and a lot more of the stuff u dont wanna hang around with.
Be lucky to see one, they are listed as an endangered species. Oh, killing them and getting caught can cost between 5k to 50k€.

  4. European Hornet.

They’re intimidating at first, but honestly they’re a lot less obnoxious and far less likely to sting you than regular wasps.

I’d say they’re pretty comparable to bumblebees in how chill they are – unless you give them a genuine reason to freak out, they won’t.

They mostly hunt other insects, and aren’t anywhere near as keen on sweets as wasps are, which means you won’t have to constantly shoo them away from your food if you’re ever having a meal outside during summer time.

  5. Biggest cons of hornets:

They can be pretty loud when they bump against the windows/door.

They really like to be active at night. So don’t let them in or you’ll have to catch them with a cup.

Best not to step on them.

    Biggest pros:

They prey on wasps (also bees) and really only go for protein so your food is usually safe and wasps will stay clear

  6. Those round holes are from him. Kill it.

Carpenter bees are the bees that make perfectly round holes in wood. These holes are not for eating, but rather for nesting and raising their young. Female carpenter bees drill these tunnels and chambers where they will lay eggs.

  7. Hornet. Often chill but don’t “shoo” them, they might sting. I’ve seen the results of their bite and often it gets ugly.
