For context, there was a study in Estonia of drug residue concentration in waste water, which is used to estimate the amount of drugs that are being consumed. This sentence has raised some eyebrows:

"Tallinnassa yhtä kaupunkilaista kohden kulutettiin viime vuonna 48 480 annosta kannabista päivässä"

= In Tallinn, 48 480 doses of cannabis were consumed per citizen per day last year.

My guess is that the statistic was actually 48.48 per 1000 residents, and the reporter wanted to state the amount per resident, and ended up multiplying the figure by 1000 instead of dividing it by 1000.

OR maybe the people of Tallinn together smoke 22 billion joints a day? 😀

  1. No, I confirm I definitely do 48480 doses daily if not more. Looks correct to me.

  2. Hey man that’s pretty wild man there’s weed in the water? Where?

  3. The main finding of the study is **hemp** a sharp increase in the amount of consumption residues (THC-COOH) in Tallinn. If in 2023 the average amount of THC-COOH in Tallinn was 9,915 mg per 1,000 inhabitants in wastewater, then in 2024 it was 12,610 mg (increase of 27%). The residue of cannabis use in wastewater in the Rakvere region was 8737 mg per 1000 inhabitants. If the amounts of cannabis are converted into doses to get a better overview, an average of 48,480 doses of cannabis were used per day for the residents of Tallinn and 1,317 in the Rakvere region. Daily use of cannabis is common in both study areas, plus recreational episodic use.

  4. My neighbour just last year got a package from DPD courier and it was huge. He opened it and it was 20kg of weed. He was afraid so, he reported it to police.

  5. What amount is considered a dose?

I imagine there is a huge gap between what science says is the amount needed to affect a physiological change and the amount a lifelong smoker needs to overcome their tolerance.

  6. It’s because the weed sold in Tallinn has been getting weaker lately. Any less won’t do the trick.

  7. Cannabis-Johannes is an outlier and should not be included in statistics.

  8. I’ve always wondered… in those tests… do they ever account for people not passing residue drugs in their system but flushing down their entire stash because The Police showed up?
Because that’s one version of explaining what happened here.

  9. Y’all are smoking and not passing the joint around?!? That’s so rude guys!!!

  10. 😅 I love how the reporter made math mistake but instead of going “48k doses a day per person sounds impossible” they went “this sounds totally feasible”.

  11. No we estonians are not smoking weed as people here are telling me.. only maybe 10 people.
