Israel has been holding “secret talks” with senior Syrian government officials in recent days regarding the possibility of Syria joining the Abraham Accords. This report comes less than 24 hours after US President Donald J. Trump formally asked Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa, during a meeting in Saudi Arabia, to join the accords and normalize ties with Israel. One of the meetings reportedly took place in Azerbaijan.
Steve Witkoff, President Trump’s Middle East envoy, told Breitbart News that four to six countries, including Azerbaijan, Armenia, Syria, and Lebanon, may join alongside Saudi Arabia and others in the Abraham Accords in the coming months.
Also, according to Israel’s KAN news, following the lifting of US sanctions on Syria, senior officials in Damascus, including officials and businessmen, recently approached Israeli businessmen in an attempt to encourage Israeli investments in the country.
Not going to happen
This is a lot less surprising than people might think. There has been a risk that Syria would fall in the middle of a proxy standoff between Turkey and Israel, and poor relations with Israel would be more likely to push Syria toward fracturing into multiple states, with a Druze state in the south. Syria would risk another decade being a failed state.
Even more importantly, Syria just got out of a long and brutal civil war, and they are sick of the violence. It is absolutely in their best interests to make peace and establish economic ties with Israel, and move on with the side of the region that is prosperous.
Syria is tired of being a pawn for russia and iran, their new foreign policy seems devoted to biulding new alliances with assads enemies. so getting the saudi backing, seeking to become an american protectorate, and befriending turkey and isreal. i cant think of any nation that has higher war exhaustion then Syria.
r/syria is going to have a bad day lol
This would be a great thing!
