Amazing. The same conservative politicians who claimed the minimum wage was out of control socialism, decide it might be a good thing.
No apologies expected.
Here we are witnessing Britain being great again. Putting British people and jobs first, upholding workers rights, giving British businessman the right to compete and expand ,free of Eurocrats and red tape, proof that the UK has its own wage slaves and exploitable desperation doesn’t have a European accent. We already have the best food banks in Europe.
Getting away with it is the new mantra.
>If not, he said the government’s plans to make it illegal for ferry firms to pay less than the minimum wage, would likely force him to do so.
How?
P&O ferries fly the Cypriot flag.
It seems to me that once again HMG proving it doesn’t understand international treaties.
Staff on international ferries will be covered by the Maritime Labour Convention which is an International Labour Organization convention. Whilst it covers wages it doesn’t cover what level they should be an it’s not in the gift of HMG to decide this for staff that aren’t employed in the UK.
A ship is governed by the laws of its flag, a ship’s flag is a representation of the ship’s nationality, which means the ship is governed by the laws of registered country. In this case it is Cyprus.
Just remember the Tories wanted the UK to because Singapore-on-Thames, well I doubt Singapore imposes any wage requirements on foreign ships docking there. If the Tories do actually do this (as opposed to tough talk for the cameras) the UK will be lucky to be Johor Bahru-on-Thames.
