Nine Migrants Have Died In ICE Custody Since Trump Took Office, ICE Head Says

   Nine people have died while in the custody of Immigration and Customs Enforcement since President Donald Trump took office, ICE’s acting director testified on Wednesday while pushing back on mounting concerns of dwindling funds and overcrowding within the agency’s detention centers.

   The total number of in-custody deaths since Jan. 20 is just three deaths short of the same number seen in all of fiscal year 2024. Previous years since 2018, with the exception of 2020, when there were 21 deaths, saw an average of 5 deaths a year.

2. I don’t think law enforcement should have immunity once these people are in custody.  They should all be liable for each of the deaths.

3. This is just sad. No one should be dying in custody like that, no matter what their situation is. It’s not even about politics at this point, it’s about basic human rights.

4. Is there any additional context on these deaths? Like was it natural causes or something else?

5. It’s worth noting that detainees in ICE detention facilities are not there for criminal incarceration like the U.S. prison population. They are in Civil detention. These facilities are run by private contractors and are often exempt from FOIA and standard inspection protocols.

They’re ignoring the law, ignoring the courts when told they have to follow the law, and they take pleasure in it, every step of the way. The worst part, over 77 Million Americans voted for this, and while i am sure not all of them are happy with the outcome, far too many are.

16. To any conservatives that might try to defend this:  if 9 deaths is acceptable, why not 9 million?  Either their lives matter or they don’t.  This isn’t a slippery slope, this is the endgame.

    So we can surmise that *at least* 9 people have died. And that they’re fudging the definition of “custody” and other such things.

39. How many died in ICE custody, and how many died in private facilities subcontracted by ICE. Important because being contracted by the government doesn’t give you any kind of direct legal immunity. Also its not federal property so they have almost no protections from legal consequences.
