  1. I think this article is a bit confused:

    > Texas Sen. Ted Cruz is facing backlash after calling birthright citizenship a “terrible policy” during a Fox News appearance—despite being a direct beneficiary of it himself.

    > Birthright citizenship, enshrined in the 14th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, guarantees that anyone born on U.S. soil is automatically granted American citizenship.

    > Cruz, born in Canada to a Cuban father and American mother, gained U.S. citizenship at birth through his mother’s status.

  2. Why are people so fixated on immigration as a bad thing? We went from “needing a better to process” to “everyone out!” In record time.

  3. If only they’d make it retroactive, the USA could be restored to indigenous people.

  4. Trump should start by having birthright citizens in GOP and his WH admin volunarily LEAVE. Just like he expects asylum seekers to do.

  5. Even if it is, which it isn’t, it’s entirely irrelevant.

This isn’t about litigating the policy of birthright citizenship. It’s about whether or not the President can rewrite the Constitution through executive fiat.

Any other discussion is a distraction because they know that’s a losing issue.

  6. We Canuks were thrilled that he had to renounce his Canadian citizenship for his failed presidential run. Elbows up. 🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦

  7. Ted Cruz is the strongest case against birthright citizenship I can think of.

  8. Birthright citizen Ted Cruz wants to abolish birthright citizenship.

  9. Republican leaders and their voters have always burned the ladder after they use it. Protect the tradesmen at all costs.

  10. No wait, let him cook.

Let’s patiently wait to see if he adds a “except for those born from other planets, which would totally not effect me. This is because I am certified 300% normal human, with two anuses just like the rest of you, Ted Cruz. ” exception to a new bill about it.

  11. So could we revoke the rule that gave Ted Cruz citizenship, deport Ted Cruz, then perform a ‘case-by-case’ review and let everybody else stay?

  12. Call him Rafael. We aren’t supposed to use chosen names anymore.

  13. They’re gonna have him and Rubio resign and deported. It’s gonna be hilarious.

  14. With all the Republican insanity it’s been quite a while since I’ve heard from Fled Cruz, still too soon.

  15. The Republican platform is entirely based on pulling up the ladder behind you.

  16. Frederich and Elisabeth Trump were German citizens residing in the United States when their son Fred Trump (Donald Trump’s father) was born, meaning Donald Trump’s own father became a US citizen through birthright citizenship (jus soli). This is not about birthright citizenship, this is about only certain people being allowed in.

  17. Imagine thinking the 14th amendment was worse “policy” than the second amendment

    fuck these ghouls

  18. Anyone voting for this should put their money with their mouth is and give up any benefit they received from birthright citizenship.

  19. Can people stop calling it a policy!? It isn’t just a policy, it’s in the 14th amendment of the constitution. Ya know, the guiding document that conservatives claim to want to protect?

  20. Sorry, I’m not quite sure I follow this argument against birthright citizenship. I’ll just use myself as an example:

    * I’m a citizen of the US because I was born here, and my parents are citizens.
    * My parents are citizens because they were born here, and their parents were citizens.
    * My grandparents are citizens because they were born here, and their parents were citizens.
    * …and so on and so on back 1- 10+ generations, depending on the family line, until we arrive at “because they could afford a boat ride here”.

**It’s birthright citizenship all the way down**. I mean, except for the families that were already here before the USA existed. I guess they just woke up one day and were citizens.

  21. Is this the first time he’s made this statement?

Funny how he just quickly adopts the new talking points.

  22. It’s not a “policy” it’s enshrined in the constitution

  23. How long after they get rid of birthright citizenship will they come after naturalized citizenship?

  24. Marco Rubio’s family were illegal immigrants, yet he does everything in his power to go after illegal immigrants.

  25. Imagine that, a hypocritical, shameless piece of shit like Ted Cruz makes yet another utterly hypocritical statement.

  26. His pathway to citizenship is “good policy” while others’ is not? In any case, it’s the constitution. What part of “All persons born in the United States…are citizens of the United States” don’t these people understand?

  27. For those of you not in the know

Ted Cruz was born in Calgary, Alberta, Canada

However because his mom was born in the US and his dad became a legal citizen after immigrating from Cuba, Cruz is a naturalized citizen

  28. Ted Cruz is *literally* an example of what racists like Trump accused Obama of being. Born in a foreign country to a foreign father and an American mother. No one ever questioned his eligibility to run for president. (IIRC, he did not renounce his Canadian citizenship until he became a US Senator.)

But Canada isn’t Kenya, so there’s that.

  29. A man born in Canada to a Cuban father should definitely be careful what he wishes for. Although I’m sure there’s a face eating leopard out there that would just love to meet Ted.
