The Syrian Arab Republic is liable for more than $20 million in damages to a US citizen who was detained and tortured in Syrian prisons for 63 days.

Washington Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly on Thursday entered a default judgment in favor of plaintiff Samuel Robert Goodwin, ratifying a federal magistrate judge’s report and recommendation rendered the same day, and ordered the embattled middle-eastern nation to pay Goodwin $20.2 million.
