Tower Bridge: Extinction Rebellion activists cause closure

  1. In this thread there will be:

-People saying they agree with fighting climate change but this puts them off.

    -Someone will mention blocked ambulances

-Someone will say this is why the government is cracking down on protests

-Someone will suggest other less inconvenient ways to protest without realising that XR has already done them to little fanfare

-Someone will bring up the story of the guy who blocked a tube train at Stratford as a way to invalidate this protest

-Someone will make jokes about killing and/or running over these protestors

    -“Whatabout India/China”

  2. The thing I find most annoying about these anti-XR/environmental arguments is that they almost always help the greater society by making our everyday more sustainable. It’s not a niche hippy thing.

Want to avoid the reliance on imported energy? Phase out fossil fuels.
Want to avoid rising demand/costs of petrol/diesel/electricity? Give us viable alternatives like bicycle infrastructure.
    etc.
    etc.

  3. We’ve got to do everything we can or else we’re fucked.

    Don’t like it? Tough shit.

  4. Wish they’d do Waterloo bridge again. Was lovely strolling across during the summer and realising how quiet London is without cars

  5. Put them on the tower. Off with their heads!! Oh, the bridge you say?
Give it to the national trust for the tourists and build a proper new bridge up the river.

  6. I thought we are looking into ways to avoid using fossil fuels due to fossil fuels being limited. Do Extinction Rebellion expect them to be banned overnight and for alternative sources to magically appear? At least, they actually did something that didn’t go against their protest. I.e. Protest at the tube when it’s generally regarded better to encourage people to use public transport. Hell, it’ll be cheaper to pay extortionate prices because at the rate we’re going, it’ll cost a month’s rent just to run a fucking car.

  7. So nice to see generally supportive comments here. Story about them protesting appeared on r/environment yesterday and people were apoplectic with rage. On r/environment

  8. V6 V8 V10 V12 engines, and petrol motorcycles > the planet

Nothing more fun than burning hydrocarbons 🔥

  9. My belief in protests is that they should highlight the issues and should serve to be an inconvenience to others, because it reminds them why it is such a big issue.

Civil ans Human Rights that are fought in the past, such as LGBTQ rights, ending segregation of ethnic minorities, equal rights for women, were all fought for and had movements/protest that caused these sort of inconveniences for every day people.

Protest are suppose to make people uncomfortable. They are suppose to be a nuisance. They are suppose to be attention seeking. They are highlighting a very important cause.

Do you think black people would have better rights now if they should have done it in a different way back then and “should be done one at a time”? Fuck no.

Protests are suppose to make people uncomfortable. If a protest doesn’t do that, then its a waste.

  10. Fuck these guys. How many ordinary people do they want to piss off untill they start targeting the corperations that are really ruining this planet?

  11. There are two types of people in a crisis, irrational people that moan, cry and distrupt everything, and then there’s the smart people, who calmly engineer solutions

  12. Love it. Fully behind them.

No doubt the overall response from the docile UK population will be, cut the ropes, give em a bath etc…. Whilst wondering why their bills are in a freefall plunge upwards.

  13. Fossil fuel companies would have no business if it wasn’t for the irrefutable fact that the entire world requires fossil fuels to function.

You can target whoever or whatever you want, but it won’t change this simple fact.

The changes required to resolve climate change are so dramatic and all-encompassing that it’s unlikely anything will be done, or can be done, with the urgency that is now required.

In short, this planet is fucked.

  14. What we need to do is actually rise up and remove the Tories while remaking the system and trying to vote in actually decent and honest people who can and want to run the country. Enshrine rules so politcians can’t take money or be “lobbied” or take “donations”.

The reason why protests aren’t working is because fossil fuel companies spend millions/billions lobbying and bribing the very government officials you are trying to get the notice of to take care of this issue.

We need to take action more drastic than shutting down a bridge in London, and I’m not saying use violence or some nonsense like that.
