Literally do not see any positive externalities from this. Will just lead to more internal strife and then more calls for reservations. Just a stupid move.
Gandhi strongly condemned segregation and racial discrimination, calling it a “negation of civilization”. He believed in the equality of all people and advocated for nonviolent resistance to such injustices.
It always confused me that early on after India gained independence, and relations with the US were opening up, they really really despised us having segregation, and yes, its evil and horrible, but it always seemed extremely hypocritical for them to look down on us for it, when they have a caste system.
India needs to do away with the caste system.
It is hindering their progress.
A lot of gifted Indians are running away overseas because they’re born in the wrong caste.
Ugly, backwards system.
sigh.
I don’t know why people are so mad about this in the comment section. Wasn’t this called for by India’s left wing coalitions to bolster government grants and affirmitive action for people in lower castes? I’m pretty sure the purpose of this is so the government can’t just sweep underprivilidged groups under the rug. Like in the USA we can say that everyone is equal, and things like race shouldn’t matter, but there are systemic issues that different groups face and I think its good for the government to aknowledge that underpriviledged peoples and communities exist so they can be better served.
Like ignoring the reality that caste exists as a social structure really only helps upper caste people.
For everyone who thinks this is a bad idea.
Are you saying that race should be taken off the census etc in the US?
The only way this ever gets abolished is if all of the people who left and went to other countries came back to India.
When I say abolished I mean actually forgotten and never used. You can legally abolish it all you want in India, but it will still be used despite or even because of the laws. The way to get rid of it is for a large influx of 2nd or 3 rd generation Emigrants to come back to India that have little to no reference for it. The influx of people and money that find the caste system archaic and similar to the racial issue that experienced in other countries would be one of the few ways this system is ever defeated.
Fortunately America is doing a really good job driving these exact people and their money out of their country.

It’s a shame but this is the kinda thing that gets votes in india. If anyone wonders why the BJP keeps getting voted into power, just know that this is the kind of stuff their opposition wants, not economic growth or development. just more and more reservation.
Now this Census is gonna lead to more cries for reservations from the Opposition, including Caste-based reservations in the Private sector.
Do people in comment section even know what news title even means, its literally socioeconomic survey to access condition of people from marginal casts . This data is used to determine if government incentives have been helpful for marginal casts .
India’s left wing party have been asking for this change since years .
Indian constitution since its birth included various measures to overcome castism and to give reparations to the people affected by it . it include for example
Reservations in education institutes , government jobs and in elections for people from marginal casts .
India’s current prime minister pm modi is from a marginal cast .
Not doing caste census doesn’t remove caste discrimination in Indian society. It is necessary to see If the reservation has worked or not, have it benefited the scheduled castes or not.
It might shine light on uglier part of the society. would you be against study of how women are performing, their health, education job etc? No.
Of course political party are going to manipulate the produced result to bend it to their own narrative.
Americans here commenting confidently incorrect. They think they know better than the actual people in India.
Contrary to what you think this is, the caste census is to know if the affirmative action (called “Reservations” in India) has helped the lower castes or not. It’s the left coalition who are calling for this since they want to expand Reservations if the caste census finds that lower castes have not improved socio-economically. The RW BJP is betting on the opposite – i.e. the lower castes have improved and we can drop this affirmative action.
And caste discrimination has been illegal since independence; it’s just a fact that you can’t remove caste willy-nilly it since it a part of your name. I believe the newer generations will even stop thinking about in a generation or 2. Expanded Reservations however will not help this and will cause fair bit of bitterness.
Why are so many people against this? You need to have data and statistics if you want to create a plan to resolve these issues. Closing your eyes and pretending it doesn’t exist helps no one.
Caste system is a curse
I saw a conversation with an Indian activist that said that including caste data in the census may actually help do away with the caste system all together because it will allow the lower caste that make up the majority of people to see how badly they’re being screwed by that system. Here’s hoping
India has always included caste details in census.
Now they will include it for OBCs n general castes too.
The little understanding Indian people hav abt our census is ridiculous.
The irony is that many Westerners wanted the party that said it would openly use the caste system and give as much reservations as possible to all lower castes, to win the election in 2024.
Reddit loves affirmative action. Unfortunately, reddit hates to read lol
I hope data summaries won’t be reduced to averages and that alone be used to conclude that reservations have been beneficial. We need medians, we need a good histogram of income or socioeconomic-measure per caste or category. Averages are prone to outliers, so they might shift simply because a few people from each category have high income or socioeconomic-measure. Medians are more robust and reflect the middle of the distribution.
On another note, perhaps we could work towards improving the dignity of different occupations? Ensuring people from all occupations can practice their work in a safe manner (garbage collectors especially), have access to insurance and work-life balance seems like a pipe dream. But would go a long way to ensure general well-being.
People really don’t know how big of an issue caste system is in India. My educated grandmother (in her days women were barely even allowed to go to college) still believes in it.
Just another way to increase affirmative action and make all premier institutes inaccessible to one particular demographic because of something they did 100 years ago
ATLEAST READ THE ARTICLE BEFORE COMMENTING.
Brahmins (highest caste) who are 3% of population holds significant positions in judiciary, media, health , education and law. people are denying it altogether these stats. the higher (13% of population) caste hold much of wealth of india.
There is lot of push from higher castes to remove reservation system which allows education and jobs for marginal castes. To be noted that only 1% of all formal and informal sector jobs are allocated via reservation system. and a separate quota exist for higher caste poor students.
if 2 persons have equal wealth and earnings, one from higher caste is treated much better in society. people from lower castes have significant trouble finding housing, better connections, marriage prospects. entering temples is restricted, housing is segregated, dignity is mocked at via slurs, agressions etc.
Lower caste people have been k*ll*d for keeping moustaches.
Lower caste people have been k*ll*d for hiding horses.
Lower caste people have been k*ll*d for touching higher castes
This is a significant issue in indian society. You don’t often hear these stories because lowers castes are incredibly poor and don’t have access to media and internet. they lack education (usually denied). The census will likely expose the stats so this is talk of the town right now.
the amount of people (likely americans) wanting to comment on a topic they are truly ignorant about is astounding. you lack any sort of understanding when it comes to india, so probably should sit out any sort of discussion
