Belleville firefighters dealt with a grass fire in a homeless encampment on vacant land in the city’s west end Saturday morning.

Residents in the area of Palmer Road North and Moira Street West reported smoke coming from a field shortly before 6:30 a.m.

No one was on scene when firefighters arrived.

The fire was contained to a pit area on the property and there were reports that small propane containers had been exploding.
