  1. Not only should we not be funding it, it should be banned. However at the moment there’s only 2 parties that I’m aware of that support banning it, social democrats and people before profit. so I can’t see it changing anytime soon

  2. How else could they launder so much money? I mean, you hardly think they’re gonna pay tax on their hard earned millions either?

  3. I was there for a stag party a few months ago.

    God it’s a shithole.

The only available toilets were portaloos.

And there was basically nobody there other than us and another stag party.

  4. This and horse racing should be banned. State sponsored, publicly funded, animal abuse and gambling. Unbelievable.

  5. I often wonder if you couldnt bet on horseand dog races would they even exist?

  6. There are much stronger argument than financials with respect to greyhound racing. Most of them are ethical.

To address your point about the €19m, It’s an absolutely huge industry in Ireland. In 2019 greyhound racing contributed €132m to the Irish exchequer and its estimated that 4000 jobs are directly or indirectly reliant on the sport.

Financials are the only reason this thing wasn’t ended years ago.

  7. Could have had the World Rally Championship here for 3 years, but they refused to help fund it and fund cruel, unnecessary, boring and unpopular shite like this instead.

  8. €19 million for this yet they decide to drop the 7s rugby team?…

  9. That’s enough money to privately diagnose 100k autistic adults, a service not provided by the HSE.

What else could the government fund with €19M instead of this barbaric nonsense.

  10. Why? He was shit that day and needed it as a reminder he’s playing for United and not some Sunday league team.

  11. It’s not 19 million “for this”, Kilkenny is a small and privately operated venue only under license by the IGB/GRI.

There is 17 tracks on the island of Ireland, 6 of which are operated privately under license.

I do agree 19 million is too much, but A lot of people really haven’t a clue what they are talking about when it comes to the greyhound industry, and still think it’s like it was in the 80s and 90s. The industry has moved on, it is no longer just some farmer or someone throwing a dog out the back, racing them then putting them down.

There is a huge amount of red tape, regular checks on conditions, regular vet check ups including before and after a race, rehoming schemes and accountability. You can’t just buy any dog and race them.

Anyone I know who has greyhounds, the dogs are treated like royalty, the best of butcher meats, big heated or cooled kennels, walked 1-2 times a day including gallops in fields/tracks and swimming, conditions of both the kennels and the dogs checked regularly by officials, all vaccinations and vet checks up to date, massages almost daily, and when retired, is rehomed to a family home either privately or through a number of places who do this. So it can be your own personal opinion on racing, but unless you have actually been involved or seen the industry in person over the last 5 years, you will realise it is absolutely nothing like it used to be, can more be done? Of course it can, just like everything else.

The industry also employs thousands of people, not just at the tracks, where you have tote, bartenders, cooks, waitresses/waiters, vets, cleaners, officials, and lots of more staff behind the scenes. But also staff on a regular basis, who come to check the condition of the dogs, check paperwork, check the facilities and kennels, if things are not up to standard they are issued a ban and a massive fine, people who are hired to walk dogs for bigger trainers, there is so much more that goes on beyond people thinking the industry is stuck in the 80s and 90s, and thinking that the 19 million is going on a small privately owned track like this.

  12. All road racing postponed indefinitely, Skerries, Tandragee, Kells et all. A matter of a 300k insurance bill they can’t pay. Would the state contribute? No because they don’t fund ‘bloodsport’.
