TIL after the loss of Schleswig-Holstein to Prussia in 1864, the Danish king Christian IX secretly offered that the whole of Denmark join the German confederation, if he would retain Schleswig and Holstein. This wasn’t known until 2010, when the current queen gave access to the royal archives.

Denmark didn’t loose Schleswig-Holstein. Denmark lost the duchies of Slesvig and Holsten in 1864.
