Hi all,

Have been in Copenhagen for more than a year now. I have a regular tax card (36% tax), but I understood there’s also a tax exemption card? This one [https://www.skat.dk/skat.aspx?oid=2299952](https://www.skat.dk/skat.aspx?oid=2299952)

How does that work? I mean, I don’t make a lot, so it could be interesting for me to apply for it. It says it is created automatically for people over 15 that have Danish citizenship, which I don’t have. Would I still be able to request this as an expat, after a year that I have been here?

Many thanks in advance 🙂

Do you have any specific question?

How it works is explained in the link you posted.

How much money do you make annually before taxes?

  2. Everyone in Denmark has a certain amount of money they can earn before they have to pay taxes (Personfradrag).

If you expect to earn less than that amount (about 46.000 DKK a year), you can get a tax exemption card that means no taxes will be witheld from your paycheck.

That said, you probably earn too much for this to be a possibility.

  3. Normally the tax exemption is spread across the year, so it’s deducted from the amount you pay taxes to. (You can read that on your paychecks, it should be a separate category)

If set up correctly, it will all be calculated automatically. The exception should also work for you as an immigrant or foreign worker.

You can see on former payslips if it has been deducted correctly. Some companies fail to update the checks from SKAT, meaning you will get the amount you paid too much in taxes back in April.

Another thing; I’m not sure if you have already. But if not. I can highly recommend enrolling into Danish language schools. My BF went to one in the evenings for a year and now speak fluent. During the lessons they teach you about this kind of stuff (and all other kind of Danish stuff) making it much easier to understand; especially for immigrants who recently came to Denmark. It always sucks figuring out afterwards or too late if you paid too much in taxes; and a lot of it, is not easy to understand- even for Danes.
